Smart's long-overdue next-generation Fortwo city car will make its debut at next year's Frankfurt Motor Show, according to new reports out of Europe.

On the scene since 2007, the current second-generation benefited from a makeover this year, and an all-electric model has also joined the line-up.

The past year has seen the Daimler-owned brand reveal a number of new concepts however, and it is known that a new platform is in development as part of a new alliance with Renault.

Interesting, as the model year transition is usually in October. If we're really lucky the 453 will be available for order in October 2013 - if not, who knows?

Model year changeovers are all over the place with auto manufacturers. Heck, the '13 fortwo has been available for a few months now.

The 2013 model year for smart is going to be long (probably in light of the upcoming changeover to the 453) but smart normally brings out their new model in October.
