I received a notice in the mail from Mercedes of a recall related to headlamp caps on the 2016 smarts. Called to make an appointment (needed a servicing anyway) and was told that there is, in fact, a second recall also in place, for the parking brake. So, I'm thinking that many of you may not know of one or both of these (I almost threw out the recall notice from MB, since I don't own a Mercedes and assumed it was marketing materials). Interestingly, the parking brake issue advises that you call "smart" (and remember, this is the one I didn't receive a notice on) and the headlamp one advises that you call MB. I advise that you call your dealership and just have them look up your VIN. Or, theoretically, you can do that here (but I've never gotten the site to work; it just keeps loading after I put in my VIN): www.mbusa.com/recall

I suspect you will get a recall letter on the parking brake before too long. That recall is a lot newer than the first one. Letters are probably just now going out.

Word of warning ... actually 2.

(a) don't ever go to Cherry Hill Mercedes. This is the third time I've been screwed by them.

(b) there are parts needed for the recall, and you need to make sure that they order the parts and that the parts are in before you take your car in. This is true even if, when you call to schedule the appointment, and you speak with your service advisor, and you specifically say you want to bring the car in because of the recall notice, and he looks it up and tells you that there are actually two recalls, so he sees right there in front of him exactly what the recalls are, and then he schedules an appointment for you to bring the car in. Because what may end up happening is that you sit in the dealership for FIVE FRIGGIN' HOURS before they sheepishly tell you that they don't have the parts, never checked to see if they had the parts before making the appointment, and that they have failed to locate the parts anywhere nearby which is what they were trying to do for the last FIVE FRIGGIN' HOURS without telling you because they forgot to check on the parts when they made the appointment for you to bring the car in for the recall servicing.

The mistake you made was assuming the M-B employees were competent. Keep the bar set low and make sure you tell M-B what you expect to be done when you are dealing with them.

I take it a step farther and M-B is always the last resort for work to be done on my car.
