Hi, I’m new to SCoA....but not new to the SMART brand. This is my second smart. My first was 2008 which I recently sold. Now I own a 2017 smart convertible. I’m having minor issues with my key fob. When I park my car in my garage, often times the key fob will not remotely lock or engage the alarm on the car. And in rare instances when the key fob is able to lock and engage the alarm remotely....when I go to remotely unlock it, it does not work. I then have to manually unlock my car. Funny thing, this NEVER happens when out in the open. Could I be getting cross interference in my garage? This never happened in my 2008 smart convertible.

I have not seen this happen to the smart 453's. It sounds like it will be difficult to diagnose if it works perfectly out in the open or elsewhere, because if you took it to your dealer's service department it sounds like it won't malfunction.

But, maybe it is interference in your garage. I would replace the fob battery with a new one and test it out first. If you have any other wireless devices in your garage or your house, try turning them off one at a time and see if your problem clears up. Once you have exhausted all of those attempts, if you're still having issues I would try it outside and repeat many times just to be sure it is working properly outside. If it is, most likely you are having interference issues while the car is parked in your garage.

Welcome to SCoA.

Do BOTH of your MY17 453 key fobs share this issue?

Thank you....I’ll try that.

So this MY17 453 is a new to you pre-owned purchase? May want to "nicely" ask the seller if they happen to still have the other original fob?

Be very careful with the one key fob that you have while exploring ALL options to get a duplicate (second) one made. There are several threads on the subject as it relates to the 450/451 here on SCoA.

Sadly you may be THE FIRST to need a 453 fob which may be only available through a smart Center? This likely will NOT be a cheap date but only gets more expensive if you lose the ONE fob that you have.

If the vehicle wasn’t advertised as only coming with one key, I’d try to get the dealer/person you bought it from to pay for another or to find the second one. These keys are serious (expensive) business!!

Yikes!! I’ll keep that in mind and guard my one key fob with my life. Suppose I better ask my local SMART dealer how much another key is gonna set me back. Thanks!

Unfortunately, it was advertised with only one key and I suppose I wasn’t thinking about the cost of another key when I bought the car. Dang!!! I’m gonna call my local dealer and see how much another key is gonna set me back. Thanks for your help!
