I have a convertible and the roof bars don't have handles or a glasses cubby to worry about, but I have to applaud your efforts. I was following this thread with interest because I too couldn't understand the need for TWO glasses holders. You've done a fantastic job. Well done Sir.:worship:

Today I replaced the passenger side sunglasses holders with grab handles. Both my wife and I own 453 smart cars so I ordered the handles from Germany using the links in the beginning of this thread. On the first car I chose to protect the surrounding headliner using painters tape and tried to using the Dremel tool with cutoff disc at a low speed to minimize the sparks. This didn't work out so well as even with the low amount of sparks it did manage to cause the headliner to smolder - easy to put out but I made adjustments for the second car. On the first one I removed all of the metal from the bottom of the existing hole. This was quick but it wasn't ideal as you can see in the first picture that the handle doesn't fully cover the hole in the headliner. It is minor and unnoticeable unless you are using the handle.

For the second car I took part of the metal from the top of the hole as well as the bottom. I also wrapped the hole with aluminum foil and packed the space behind the hole with aluminum foil as well. This allowed me to cut at high speed and not worry about the amount of sparks I was producing. The end result turned out well as the small gap between the handle and the headliner that was visible in the first one I did wasn't there in this one.

Once the hole was cut, installation of the handle is super simple. You just push it firmly into the hole so the tabs grab and then push in the rectangular plugs to keep it in place.
Thank you for posting a solution to the issue! (I had taken a lot of time researching!) It is nice to see the mod finally completed. (I can be at peace now, not getting into trouble for just trying to be helpful...)

Thank you for posting the part number. I have had a super hard time tracking down parts for the 453. Once I had that I was more than happy to start cutting into the car :). Both my wife and I couldn't understand why there wasn't a handle there to start with.

I tried several VINs of US smarts from the various models, hoping to find one with a grab handle instead of a "spectacle case". (Sometimes the terms they use are somewhat not usual for everyday US English. I even tried getting a foreign smart VIN but could not find a single one in any of the coutries' for sale ads I could find.) I couldn't find any VIN with a grab handle. I guess they don't readily make available replacement parts that none of the cars in the US would have. Of course the part number seems to be available to those now willing to pay $75 a year for access. If you ever have the need for a part number, you can PM me. Still have maybe 300 days left before I have to decide whether to pay again... (Oh, I should always note a disclaimer that it may not fit properly for reasons beyond my control/understanding, although I do try to take precautions against it.)

Again, I'm really glad it worked out for you and yours!!!! :D

This was great to read. I'm going to give it a try in our '16 Passion with a nibbler tool rather than a cutting wheel.

Will inform & post.
