What is meant by "automated manual transmission"? Can it be driven the same as an automatic -- in other words, the gears change automatically instead of having to manually change them?

I was taught to drive by my Dad, and he taught me to brake with my left foot. To me, that's as natural as walking, but it also means I don't have a clutch foot, so I've never driven a manual. I really don't want to have to learn now, even with a "paddle shifter", whatever that is.

So can someone please explain what they mean by the phrase "automated manual transmission"?

Easy drive.

JM:

Welcome to the group. :D

You will have no problems driving the Smart car.

Put it in drive, and push down on the gas peddle. Thats it!

Weeks later, when you want to play with the car, read the manual and learn to use the paddles... No Clutch to push... Ever. The Trans is run by the on board computer. :)

Best regards.
