The car stays awake for a short time after shutdown. Many cars do this, can't really tell you why outside "it's a computer thing". It should also wake up when you unlock/open the doors. :)

a smart is not a normal car. it is more computer than car. the ignition switch doesn't really control the ignition, or even the power to the car. it is a switch that gives the computers an input as to what you want to do.

You will notice that when you start the car, you turn the ey and release it right away, the car still cranks and starts. Same when you shut it off. There have been times when I get in a hurry and park, put it in park and shut off the key rather quickly. The car will then start beeping at me. First time it happened I freaked out a bit but I found that turning on the key again, waiting a few seconds and turning it off would silence the beeping. it also would eventually stop beeping too.

It is just your car's way of reminding you to slow down and take a breath once and awhile.

The "P" light should go out at the same time the backlit display (fuel gauge etc,...) goes out. If you shut of the ignition and sit quietly for a minute or two and listen you'll hear the relay click in the SAM under the dash as the car goes to sleep (as Jimvw57 said). It's LED's it up and the drain is very nominal.
I find if you turn the ignition to "on" but don't start ther car and then forget to turn it back off, in about 20 minutes or less the computer will shut the power of to the ignition. Then you have to turn the ignition switch off and then back on to get it to come on. If you leave the headlights on and shut down the car the headlights go out, but I'm not sure if the parking lights will go out automatically if you shut the ignition off and leave them on. I'll have to try that and see of they shut off. DCO

good answers guys they all make sense.....especially it's more computer than car. that's nice but scares the crap out of me if something should go wrong requiring a repair facility. at least with american cars alot of the work can be done by you if you take it to auto zone and read the obd codes.

yeh, i have experienced the beeping when turning it off too and wondered what in the world.....

now if we could just recline the seats further and tell the car to drive us to work.....lol
