Auto insurance for a 2005 450??!
I just picked up my first Smart car this weekend… A 2005 Passion Cabriolet. Really excited with the car, but I’m running into an insurance nightmare! I have all my insurance with Allstate, they will not insure it and I’ve made a number of phone calls and online inquiries with no luck. The only insurance I can find was General ,and they’re charging a fortune! I want to drop them within the month and get a real insurance company. What do you guys use? Every insurance company I talk to says it’s a gray market car, the VIN does not show up, and they won’t insure it. By the way I live in Florida. Thanks!

I use a small local insurance company for the 450s since all of the big guys want to charge a fortune for it.

Try Hagerty or Grundig Ins companies. They specialize in special interest, street rods, rare

and collector cars. They are very reasonable, offer stated value insurance, and no hassles. I have use Hagerty for years. The only stipulation, you must have a daily driver car to get the low rates.

I've got mine on State Farm.


The local agent had to take pictures of the VINs to satisfy their underwriters.


Interestingly, the Title Completion notice from the State of Colorado came back with a value of $12,000.
I got my insurance agent to write the policy for $10K replacement; works out to $500 for six months for the 2005 450.


I don't even think my 2016 453 is worth that much :shrug:

I pay $366 for 6 months on 2013 Smart with Progressive. I pay $427 for my wife's 2012 Kia Soul. It's not bundled with my house and I have no idea if I'm paying too much. I looked at a bunch of other places and they were all about the same.

I thought Florida had the cheapest auto insurance. I know every state is different, but here in AZ I pay $101 for my 2015 ED Smart Fortwo for 6 mo. I have Progressive with 3 cars total and homeowners. Only have Liability and Comp with $500 ded and $0 glass, because our auto insurance here is outrageous.
However, they are now raising the rate to $123, along with increasing our other cars, so I've called the local office to discuss.
Didn't have any problems getting the insurance though. I may call Hagerty if there is one here.

I use Root insurance. It was actually cheaper than everyone I tried. I had to use the app to track my speeds and breaking for almost a month and then I was approved.

Just yesterday, a gentleman at Smart Madness told me they used Hagerty in the past to insure their 450 Smarts! I called Hagerty back, and still no dice!

I owned a kit car years back, had the same problem. Ended up just carrying liability. That maybe your only choice.
There may not be enough value left on the car for insurance companies to write a collision & comprehensive policy on. Just staying.

Probably on a 451 but 450s for some reason are 10 years older than the 453 but are worth more.
As I mentioned before I got a policy from State Farm with collision primarily because of the glass roof and the hail we get here
Hope I don't have to claim it but where are they going to find a 20 year old glass roof? lol



I already had the 453 passenger side tridion fixed from baseball sized hail last year (they were able to PDR the driver side tridion)

Progressive will insure it looking like someone above said for a "stated" value.
I just said $7,000.
