show my battery light is on, I check the battery with a meter, and reeds 12. something, I started the engine and checked it again and It read 14. something volts I’m assuming the alternator is in good shape! what does this mean if my battery reads 12 V and with the engine on reads 14. Does anybody have any answers please..

12.x V and 14 V on sounds like a normally operating system.

But as noted auto parts stores usually have the proper equipment to check/verify.

The light usually means the 12 V is not being charged properly. If the voltages are 12.x V engine off and 12.x V engine running that usually sets the light on. Normally with engine on one would expect 13 V - 15 V.

Unless I'm missing something, shouldn't jzchen be spot on? When I test alternators I look for 14 volts at idle, which sounds like the case here.

The auto parts store test should shine a light on what's broken, hopefully.
