So I had to look into getting a battery for my new project smart...

The smart car sizes are called H5
Regular $ 130-160
Glass mat $ 200

These are roughly 40-50 pounds! WTF

Ion motorcycle batteries are less than 5 for about $250

There are many things to consider, how much u will be constenly pulling adding a shutoff to not drain the ion, what is the cold start amp, and then there is the alternator pulling too much so get a smaller one.

Then can run one battery for engine and another for accessories?

I converted one of my cars over to use motorcycle lithium batteries. People run them in miata race cars as a single unit. I ended up using two in parallel since a typical motorcycle battery has very little reserve power in a car application. That drives the cost up into the $400-$500 range. So yes it can totally be done and works very well. You should actually see the engine spin over a bit quicker too. The lithium standing voltage is 1.5 or so volts higher than a lead acid.

I used battery tender batteries because that's what the miata guys were doing. For some reason they are not available until further notice as they develop their next gen ones.
