Smart Fortwo and Bugatti Veyron head up list of top loss-making cars | Autocar

Smart is the biggest loss making car manufacturer in the last 15 years. The new fortwo and forfour is surely their last chance before the plug is pulled on the company. They will have to amaze us with these new releases or it'll be over (I ...don't fancy their chances). Car manufacturers are chasing higher efficiency so are making lighter cars with smaller engines and better aerodynamics. Although smart got there first with a vision, they will be beaten at their own game.

Journalists love to beat a dead horse. Yes, smart lost money in the early years on the 450, 452, & 454, but they have been in the black on the 451. Most of the losses were contributed to the start-up costs of smart. They also mis-judged the market(and costs) for the roadster.

At least this guy put 1999-2006 in the list. Although, IMHO, it's a large injustice to smart to not call out that they are making money now.

But that doesn't make headlines, does it? :|

Right, and just for some perspective on an article published a year and a half ago, and to add a citation to the comment in the previous post that the they've been in the balck on the 451, Autoevolution had this to add:

What the automotive analysts fail to mention is that the smart fortwo is actually the most successful smart model that the company manufactured over the years, with the roadster, roadster-coupe and the forfour splitting most of the blame for the billion Euros losses that the brand actually had until 2006.

Yup. The company began turning around in 2007 (the initial 451 release) and finally made it into the black in 2008 when so many Americans pre-ordered and bought smarts that there was a shortage and waiting list over a year long.

And now, we know that even without America, smart keeps rolling in the dough. How much into the black are they? Only someone like Bob Diaz has the patience to figure that out. :)

Daimler should consider telling the public that smart isn't the money loser it used to be.

WOW, what a scoop, again, and again and again . . .

Gotta love our 24/7 news world who must regurgitate old stories and label them as NEWS?

Yes, the FIRST GENERATION 450 R&D costs combined with some 450 derivative models (1999-2006) that weren't ready for prime time qualify Daimler as having given birth to one of the European auto industry's top 10 most costly ventures of the last 15ish years.

To Kane's comment - the collaborative (with Renault) design and production of the new 453 may represent the last attempt to put a smile on the M-B Accountants face when they look at the smart brand P&L?

But in some markets (the U.S.) CAFE offset credits are what allow Daimler to sell those HIGH MARGIN AMG gas guzzlers. When you look at the high price tag of one of their performance M-B vehicles "baked into" the margin are the losses of a smart sold somewhere in the U.S.

smart didn't beat anyone to the aerodynamic front, since the smart is basically a brick. There are basically two ways to reduce aerodynamic drag: 1) reduce the frontal area 2) decrease the coefficient of drag Cd

The new smart is generally reported to be wider than the 451, I doubt it's any shorter therefore we can surmise that the new area is equal to or grater than the 451. Second the shape may be slightly tweaked, but as long as the butt-end of the thing is flat, it's not going to lower the Cd significantly, though I suspect that it might be lowered a bit. Net gain in aerodynamic efficiency? My guess is it's probably close to a wash on one side or the other.

The efficiency gains for the next gen smart are likely in the engine -- smaller displacement with turbo (they should have never abandoned that concept -- it was ahead of it's time!) and decreased parasitic drag by using lower rolling resistance tires.

What they could have done is gone for a different lay out like the T-25, which would have allowed them to decrease the frontal area; then used their bionic concept car-type body to improve aerodynamic efficiency without sacrificing interior volume. They could have been hitting 60mpg+. They have no vision...:nerd:

For it to dramatically affect CAFE ratings more will have to be sold. With the non-existant marketing seen in this part of the country it won't happen.

Someone posted earlier they get a 2 for 1 credit for the electric drive smarts which is why they're pushing them for now. :)
