I have 2008 black and white smart fortwo. Im pretty sure the engine is blown on it. Id like to get some advice,,,input,,,recomendations,,,anything from people here that know more about the car than some dealer that I have no idea about.

Should I replace with new or used?
Where can I find engines?

Thanks for your help!!!

I have seen 2 or 3 cars on Ebay with front end damage so I'd guess the motors might be OK. If you are theone paying for the replacement of the motor, I'd get a quote for new and used motors. Used motors may be in short supply so there may not be a big price difference. With a used motor, you won't know how it was broke in or if it wad abused or not. Rebuilding the motor may also be an option. Hard to say without specifics on what happened to the original motor.

Thanks for responding,,,,I did go onto ebay but was unable to find such damaged veh.'s. My kids drive the smart car and didnt pay attention to the oil light. Im pretty sure the engine is blown for that reason. I have done some research to even find a wrecked smart car, but again, unable to locate one just yet. Still looking though.
Thanks again.

I've not actually checked myself, but there was a thread here a while back where somebody had checked into the price of an engine, and I believe they were quoted about $8K.

I just got off the phone with the dealership....OOOMMMGGG....$10,602.00.
OMG indeed! That's insane. Someone else on here bought a slightly wrecked smart for like 6k from an auction place. A few body panels later he was driving the thing while trying to track down airbags, etc. 10k, as if...

10K thats crazy. Why not just take it apart to see what went wrong, can't lose anything and you might find that its not that bad.

I really do appreciate everyone's input,,,,it is insane......Ive been on the computer all day looking at every option available to me but with very little luck....Id love to find a wrecked one,,,I can always use parts. I cant find a rebuild kit....so the only place for me to go is the dealer so far. Still looking for any auction for a wrecked one though.....even if I had to go out of state it would be worth it. Any more input is greatly appreciated.

Wowzers, at 10k you might as well buy a pure and make the very first 451 glider.

Just a thought, but that engine is used is some vehicles sold in the Far East; perhaps supporting vendor SmartPitstop could get you pointed in the right direction for repair parts. :)

Ouch!!!

There's a member of our Houston group who used to work in the Smart Service dept of a local Smart dealer here in town and now runs his own shop. He owns a Smart himself. If you will PM me, I will give you his name and number. He may be more reasonable.

I just thought of an idea.

Don't replace it with another 451 motor, find yourself a cdi motor and drop it in!

More fuel econ!

Any competent engine rebuilder can remove the engine take it apart, replace the rings, pistons, etcc. and put it back in, He/she can even cross referance pistons, etc.. and may even bore it out a bit and you'll have an even better engine when it's done. Go to a Mitsubishi specialist, Or...
Have you just Taken it to a dealer with the words... "I can't start it" and nothing else, let them diagnose it, they'll probably charge you an hours labor and tell you what's wrong with it. PS, Why did the oil leak in the first place?
