OEM paper filters present an elevated resistance to the passage of air and consequently a reduction in engine performance. Compared to a paper filter the BMC Air Filter permits a notably higher air flow passage, producing less than half the Pressure Drop over the paper filters. This doesn't compromise the filter's engine protection efficiency: thanks to the combination of the different oiled layers, containment of all impurities is guaranteed as far as 7 microns, while paper filters generally require total filtration of particles as small as 10 microns. So BMC air filters let more air into the engine while still protecting it better than paper ones.

I know "Anecdotal evidence is NOT evidence" but here's my story. Upon installing a Dynomax muffler, the top speed of MY smart went from the advertised "electronically limited" 96 miles per hour to 99 miles per hour. Then with the air filter, I was able to crack 100. Not 101, just 100. The only other mods are Smart Madness Performance lowering springs and 195/55-15 front 205/55-15 rear tires. I'm discounting the tire size because a) these calculated out to be quite close to stock diameter and 2) unless the car uses GPS for speed, it is reading revolutions, not actual distance so "X revs = Y miles" as far as the car's speedometer is concerned. In conclusion, take all of that with a grain of salt because as Abraham Lincoln said, "The problem with internet quotes is that you can't always depend on their accuracy."
