Are the brake lights supposed to work with out the key on? Any other car I have ever had, the brake lights lit up regardless of having the ignition on.When I push the pedal, they do not light up unless the key is on.

That's normal operation. IIRC it has something to do with how the brake switch operates. No power, no lights.

Older cars could suffer a switch failure and the stop lights stayed on and ran your battery down.

I'm glad newer cars have the circuit downstream of the ignition switch.
