I saw Smart is selling its own branded car seats on accessory list, but there is no ISOFIX anchor points on our passenger seat like they sell in other markets. I bought several different convertible car seats for my son and I am interested in taking him for a ride in it. I know that we have to disable the passenger's air bag before installing the car seat for any two seaters. But has anyone installed a car seat on our Smart before?

There's a whole section in the owners manual on child seat procedures. The passenger airbag is normally off unless it senses adult weight in the seat. If you have questions about a specific seat your smart dealer should be able to answer them. :)

I read the manual. I have a 45lbs husky, and even my dog sitting on the passenger seat can trigger the seat belt alarm during the trip to dog park. Also my convertible car seat is quite heavy, I think I have to switch it off before I can let my kid ride in the car.

I was just trying to see if someone else on this forum letting their kids ride in this car before or currently, because I kept getting people saying bs like "it's not safe for the kid in a plastic panel wrapped car" bluh bluh bluh. I bought SUVs for hauling the kids, but I thought this might be fun to let them ride in the smart with the top down.

The weight limit for airbags off is about 40 pounds. Unless I’m mistaken, there also isn’t a way to actually turn off the passenger airbag on the US spec 453s.

Mercedes-Benz did cook up a solution to having always on airbags in their US spec cars. It’s basically by selling a MB branded (expensive) car seat that overrides the computer. Not sure if those seats work in a smart.

My mother weighs just under 80 lbs. She has severe scoliosis, and most, if not almost all of the time, the Passenger Airbag Off is lit, not specifically a 453 as we don’t have one, at least on the two Toyota cars in the household so far. Try putting the seat in and child. The seat may correctly detect a child is there. Sometimes manufacturers suggest their “Mercedes” seat will be correctly detected, but leave that for if it does not detect your current one properly.

On the website, there are different MB branded car seats available for 453.

Also, on the owner's manual, it stated:

" Rearward-facing child restraint system
If it is absolutely necessary to fit a rearward-
facing child restraint system to the
front-passenger seat, always make sure that
the front-passenger front airbag is disabled.
Only if the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF
indicator lamp is permanently lit is the
front-passenger front airbag disabled.
Always observe the child restraint system
manufacturer's installation and operating
instructions.
"

So I would assume there has to be a way to disable the air bag. Maybe you are correct, I may have to buy MB branded car seat.... ugh

This is particularly useful.....

Tablet holder for iPad® Air.

The holder turns the rear into a mobile cinema or digital play area. It is configured for the iPad® Air and is attached to the backrest of the driver or front passenger seat. The device is ergonomically and securely integrated and can be removed at any time. A cable enables charging via the USB connection in the centre console.

Keeps those passengers in the rear occupied on long drives. :D

I'm guessing that manual was created for both the fortwo and the forfour in mind. :D

If lebikerboy is correct, then it looks like fortwos in other markets have the ability to turn off the airbag with a flip of a switch. The US spec smarts (like some US spec Benzes) look to have had that option removed.
