Was playing a book on tape, and one track started acting up. Switched slots, and same track acted up, so wiped down with same results, then scrubbed with dish detergent, and dried well.

Same problem, and played rest of book, but next group of DVDs didn't play at all ... Got CD Error message after a long 'Move CD' set of messages.

Book that had just played well had same problems.

Has my CD player crapped out? Radio is fine. Is there any way to clean system if read head is dirty, etc?

Cheers, Bob in KCMO

Well....sort of.
You'll need to get the radio out of the car. Next , you'll need to get a can of that "dust off' stuff (compressed air in a can) Open the case of the radio. Find the optical pickup on the CD drive and CAREFULLY give the lens of the laser pick up a blast of the dust off. This may remedy your problem....DO NOT use any of those available 'CD lens cleaners' things.

Go to the store and get a CD lens cleaner DISK... They have little short bristles that stick up and brush off the lens, while the song plays through to the end... DONE.
If that dosen't work, Get one of these, and call it an UP-GRADE...
