I wouldn't call them junk unless you call practically all oem cd players (particularly with changers in them) "junk." At this point, it is a somewhat common occurrence for in-dash cd players with changers to start malfunctioning, jamming, refusing to play cd's. It has happened to nearly every in-dash cd changer/player that I have owned in numerous vehicles from Mercedes-Benz, to Infiniti, to Acura, to an aftermarket Blaupunkt I installed in a car. Ironically enough, the only one that never jammed on me was the one equipped in my '09 smart.
I yanked it out in favor of a touchscreen navi unit with Bluetooth, assuming it was only a matter of time before the changer started malfunctioning anyway...

My '15 smart ED only has AM/FM and two "Media" inputs: USB and AUX. I use a TaoTronics Bluetooth Receiver in the AUX input, which allows for my phone or a Bluetooth-equipped iPod, or a 4Gb USB micro thumb drive. I have all the entertainment I could want at my disposal.

Oh hey, @lebikerboy, I have several hundred CDs. And a very nice, expensive B&O system on which to play them. At home. But I do find it much less hassle to load several DAYS worth of music on a USB drive or iPod that is much easier to carry and manage in a vehicle. Heck, my E-class includes a 10Gb "music register" that enables me to direct copy from CD to onboard HDD. The only time I use my CD changer is for that one-off load onto disk...

You may be having trouble, but mine has always worked perfectly when used, and the new local Smart owners that I have met seem to enjoy their CD players as well. I listen to my phones music now for the most part though.

Most common problems with CD players, I actually like my OEM radio.
Your disk is covered in crud, dust or scratches.
Your lens is dirty.
The 6 disk changer is known to have some issues with it's changing mechanism though but that means you can't even insert a disk.

Ok.... Convert to FLAC then... Or some other lossless audio format.I've already done that however, there is a marked difference in quality. This is coming from a guy who love's his vinyl collection which
is almost as big as his CD collection...

I think the problem is, just as with photography today is 'what is good enough'? Most people are happy with the pix their cell phones take and honestly compared to the first commercial digital cameras we used at work there is no question they are far superior. Now looking at MP3/MP4/AAC audio files as with JPG's on the photo side in order to compress the data (music or photo) some of that data is thrown away and depending on the quality settings used to make that converted file it can be substantial. Now granted a car isn't exactly the ideal listening environment and in the case of my smart cabrio with the top down wailing down a country road I'd say it would be a worse case scenario and the compressed files on my home made CD sound passable. In the ATS I drove the other day, I had to take out the USB stick because even files that had fairly lossless compression did not sound as good as the original CD. And the CDs sound different than my LP versions. Inserting a quality CD such as Live at the Pawn Shop or one of my Mannheim Steamroller CD's really showed what that system was capable of in a well insulated listening environment. I suspect sitting in a quiet Benz would be similar. So yeah I can pack years worth of music on a USB stick but seems to me that this compressed music just isn't as good and kids today have grown up with this compressed stuff so they really don't know what they are missing.....
I have a fairly large LP collection as I've always had the audio bug, some pretty decent turn tables, amps and speakers as well and I will confess that sticking a USB key into the dash of the car is a whole lot more convenient but I just don't 'love' the way this stuff sounds. Granted having to pull out a record, run it through the Nitty Gritty, put a drop of Style last on my cartridge and then warming up the amp is a lot more time consuming than tapping the computer but sometimes it's just worth it.

well all i have is the radio and the one cd player built into it...no sic changer and i wish i could put some of my good cds in it as there isn't much good music in my area but i can't afford to install a new radio/player

Home copied or original artist??............
With my 2008 single CD player,I couldn't figured out why I kept getting an"error"trying to play my home copied/burned CDs.
A friend had a new original artist CD. Opened the wrapper,put in my CD player,played PERFECT..............

Good point, older CD players will not play home made CD's and all DVD's burned on a computer.
In some cases the type of blank disk can be at fault. On my 451's 6 disk changer I've been ok with CD's burned on my Mac with Toast, my gut feeling though is to buy a decent CD laser cleaning disk and see if that solves the issue. Cars run in dusty and dirty conditions and it's perfectly normal for a layer of crud to accumulate on the laser. When this happens the radio stops reading disks. A decent cleaner can be found for between $2 and $10. For tough problems I remove the radio and disassemble it to clean the laser with a fine brush and cleaning fluid.
