i was waxing my wheels yesterday and i noticed on one wheel (didn't check the others) that the center emblem had like a clear film on it that was coming loose and i didn't want to mess with it. is this just a protective covering like on a new phone or tv that wasn't removed. or, can this be taken off with no affect to the emblem

Not sure, I don’t recall my 451’s factory wheels having such a thing on the caps. My 450 has a wheel with a very faded wheel cap. Maybe the caps these cars have delaminate over time and what you’re seeing is that laminate peeling off?
