Hey all, I am in the early stages of completely upgrading my 451 pure. I got it super cheap and will basically be turning it into the high end model. First addition I want is heated and cooled cloth seats does anyone know what I could use? As well as a very nice trim replacements and instrument cluster? I will be going more then 80 when I get done with it.

To dress up the interior,I suggest a wood dash kit from wood dash experts. Precision cut wood grain or
carbon fiber look adhesive back plastic.Wide selection wood type/grain/shade and colors of carbon fiber.........

Smart never offered cooled seats, just heated ones. I guess you could check Amazon or eBay for aftermarket kits. The US spec smart only indicates up to 100 mph. The EU Brabus registers up to 200 kph. You won't be going any faster, but the big numbers would be fun to look at. Good luck with your mods and please keep us updated with some pics. Good luck, George.

The seats would likely have to be aftermarket or a universal fit type of seat. Heated and cooled is the preferred option. But if I could get heated cloth that came with the smarts then that would be easier. The kits seem a bit sketchy in my opinion. I am aware that I will likely need a larger alternator in the end for all the mods. As for 100mpg. I went to a Mercedes dealership. During the test drive the sales man told me to step on it. It hard limited at 79. By the time I get all the mods installed it might go north of that. However high on the priority list is a better instrument cluster.

A great upgrade to your instruments would be to add the tachometer Pod. The instrument panel itself I believe there is a face plate upgrade I saw through my many google searches. Smart madness offers some nice pieces you can add to the dash.
Just an FYI, the electrical is finicky in these cars, be careful and chose wisely your electrical upgrades. You want to avoid things that could potentially put you into Limp home mode as that will certainly piss off the most dedicated enthusiast!

Thanks, is there a specific part of the electronics to watch out for? Off the top of my head I can say heated seats, a good sound system, and power windows will be the electrical addons.

Good question. Unlike the normal rebuilds we have been through, we soon learned that the SAM (fuse panel) is unlike all previous. Besides internal relays, there is mother board that controls everything electronic in the car. When we perform anything that will change the electrical aspects in the car right down to adding a speaker we will pull the negative off the battery, double check, triple check our changes and connections. We are from the solder heat shrink club as well, no crimp connectors of any kind can be found in my smart.
Do a search on Limp home mode, it’s not a happy experience.

If you can master the art of brazing, soldering is a walk in the park. You should know being a welder practice makes better. There is something satisfying about a good bead being laid down, besides it being safer!
I’m looking forward to your build as it progresses. Hopefully you’ll post some pictures, in either case best of luck for taking it on full steam.

Maybe I will pick it up. I just got a second job and will be loading up on tools. Although I should be saving for my cross country move haha. I would recommend following my mane post 2009 Smart Fortwo Pure 2010 CDI conversion for full updates.

I am surprised the car you test drove only made it to 79 mph. Most 451 gassers will top out between 90-93 and the 453 a little faster. Were you in an ED? They top out about 80 mph from what I have read.
I know rights. I am prety sure it was new from the Mercedes dealership and ED wasnt out yet. Maybe they governed it farther?

I am not sure why but some smarts do a hundred MPH. Mine does not have a problem hitting 100. I do it some days on my way to work. I live in san diego and it’s pretty flat here. I know my speedo is accurate because my Garmin Nuvi also shows the MPH. Mine may have had a mod. But nothing added on. It’s 100 percent stock equipment, Thats not to say it hasn’t had a software mod. I just can’t keep seeing posts about a limiter and not say something. Some are not limited.

Any electrical upgrades may require modifying the existing wiring loom. Every loom was made for the particular car in which it resides. The wires/printed copper loom is difficult to cut into and/or modify. Like I said, they were made for the car your sitting in, so a loom from a car with a high end audio system will have heavier wiring than a loom from an entry level car. Be careful.

It could have been something with the dealer, model year, that was the only one I have test driven in conditions where I could floor it. Good to know there is more oomph to be had. I set my cruze for 80 and sit there the whole way to work I was a little concerned about red lining it 90% of the drive time.

I came from the Generation when Recaro seats where the way to go. To have a set installed in your ride not only provided for a comfortable ride, but was a status thingy. I have been out of the loop for a while, so Recaro may have went the way of Blaupunkt which used to be what you strived to own, but now is crap!
