I just noticed today that the left rear brake drum cover appears to have a crack that runs from aprox 10 oclock to about 1 oclock diagonally.
No problem with the brakes and the covers both retain the primer gray with no rust. Why would this happen and how serious is it?
Thanks.

That isn't the cover, that is the actual brake drum.

Yes, it is time to buy a new pair. Best to do both sides at the same time.

Probably not serious, key is not experiencing any problem with brakes. If drum was cracked you would feel/hear it.

Take the wheel off and inspect closely. Factory coating/paint on the drums is very thick and apparently degrades with heat/time. When I did rear shoes on mine, coating was cracking and peeling. Stripped and repainted drums were fine.
