Daimler to acquire from Evonik a 50.1-percent interest in Li-Tec and a 10-percent stake in Deutsche ACCUmotive. This will make Daimler the sole owner of both companies
Daimler and Evonik have together developed the industrial series production of lithium-ion battery cells for electric vehicles in Kamenz. In line with its systematic focus on specialty chemicals, Evonik had been seeking new perspectives for its lithium-ion business.

Evonik CEO Klaus Engel said in October (2013) that slack demand for electric vehicles, coupled with fast-growing supply, has put pressure on prices
Presumably, this partnership was created for more than just fulfilling the Smart ED, but no other companies were found to use their supply. Given the long wait times (9 months) to receive my Smart ED in November 2013, the problem may have more likely been a lack of production from Smart vs a lack of demand.
