Just the Facts:
  • Daimler has not yet decided about the future of the Maybach brand, says Dr. Dieter Zetsche, chairman of the board of management of Daimler. But Smart is "more feasible today than any time before," he said.

  • Zetsche said Maybach sales are between 300-500 units per year and that "we are not running at the levels which we planned when we launched the product."

  • But he described Smart as "the right product for the right time."

NEW YORK — Daimler has not yet decided about the future of the Maybach brand, said Dr. Dieter Zetsche, chairman of the board of management of Daimler during a media roundtable discussion here on Tuesday. But Smart is "more feasible today than any time before," he said.

"We are not running at the levels which we planned when we launched the product," Zetsche said when asked about the health of the luxury brand.

He said the automaker sells 300-500 Maybachs per year and that the "whole segment (sells) less than 2,000 units per year."

"How the future of this brand will look like is not decided yet," Zetsche said. "No final decisions yet."

When discussing the future of Maybach, Zetsche said it "might be prudent to exchange views (with other luxury carmakers)" such as Aston Martin.

The Maybach brand has produced some of the most exclusive automobiles in the world, typically with price tags in the $400,000 range.

The EPA says a 2010 Maybach 57 with a 5.5-liter V12 returns 10 mpg in city driving and 16 mpg on the highway and costs $4,948 per year in fuel costs.

On the opposite side of the Daimler product spectrum, tiny Smart is doing well, Zetsche said.

"We are convinced that Smart is more feasible today than any time before," he said. "It's the right product for the right time. We are optimistic about the next generation."

Zetsche said Americans may be ready for smaller A and B segment cars from Mercedes-Benz.

"We are just a few months from now launching the first of four family members of the new generation of compact cars from Mercedes," he said. "

We can tap new customer segments within the compact car segment. That includes new regions, as well as the United States. It's not finally decided, but it's likely that all four of these vehicles could see the United States market as well. We see a vast opportunity in this regard. Even though I don't think the U.S. market will turn upside-down, there is more emphasis on compact cars than 10-15 years ago."

During the wide-ranging discussion, Zetsche also complained that the automaker "cannot fulfill demand for the (Mercedes-Benz) C-Class family."

If DB doesn't fix the problem of the parts costing 10 times as much as the car, it won't matter what DB brass thinks or wants. The buyers are wising up!

You don't build brand loyalty by screwing the customers when your parts fail.

Name another car with lower bodywork costs than a smart. You can change all the body panels a la "fresh up kit" for approximately $1500 for an entire shell. No overspray, no sanding, no dent repairs, and original shine and paint to the body.

What specific part on a smart car are you referring to that costs soo much more than manufacturers of other vehicles would charge for an equivalent part on another car?

If you couldn't tell, I disagree with your allegations...

This is the best. MB chair says Maybach a little slow, but he believes in the future of small cars. I hope he told Tracey.

Sounds like to me that you are one disgruntled owner. May i suggest you take up whatever beef you have with Smart in the form of a letter instead. This is not the time or place to do this kind of thing. Mercedes is from what i can tell truly doing more than what the previous proprietor did. Give them a chance.

I haven't had any issues with my car so far. What has MB done so far? Are they replacing the plastic sunroofs, the $1,000 shift actuators that fail. Blower motors.... High service cost? 2 year warranty???? Lots of complains on the SCOA on these issues and more. I haven't got any notices, from the MB yet about any new changes.

The old owners use to send me smart birthday cards, and gift cards. They also paid for the 2010 smart Nationals too.

Looked again at the Fiat 500's yesterday. 4 year 50,000 mile warranty. 3 year 36,000 mile free service maintenance for everything. Wake up MB!!!

When I looked at the Fiat 500 the prices seemed to be about $4000 more than a comparably equiped smart. Is that the cost of the longer warranty and maintenance?

I think when you get them comparably equipped it's MUCH closer. The bottom of the line FIAT comes pretty loaded. The smart isn't the bargain it once was -- it's a dog-eat-dog world out there, and that's good for the consumer!

The CLUTCH actuator seems like a pretty easy driveway repair, as is the blower motor. It cost me something like $45 or so to change my oil. And it's already been stated that the warranty is going to be increased to 3 years, 36,000 miles. I'm sure the price will go up to cover that extra year, just like has been established with the price of Canadian smarts with their longer warranty. Every time somebody complains about a certain maintenance cost, other members give examples of the same or higher maintenance costs for some OTHER vehicle they own. Just sayin...

And MB has been in control for ONE entire business day, and everyone seems to thing they should have gotten a personal phone call or something. Does nobody here work for, or do business with a large corporation? They don't move that fast.

This is the price sticker, for a base Fiat 500 Pop. The only option was the 6 speed auto transmission. I thought the little car got better milage than this too. That about the same mpg as a Honda Fit. Maybe that because of the auto trans. I don't know what a base smart pure goes for. The Fiat does have a lot of features you can't get on smart car, even at 17K total. Nice warranty though. Hope MB ups their warranty, and lowers their service cost.:)
