Local MB Parts advises their catalog refers to Inverter/DCDC as a "Battery Charger Unit". This is weird for obvious reasons but Parts says that it is a large unit with the 3 heavy cables going directly to the motor so this has to be the Inverter/DCDC, right?

Parts also advises that what is commonly called a VCU (vehicle control unit) is known as a "Power Train Control Unit" which they say is located in the rear passenger side. They confirm it has 2 thin (signal) cables connecting to it and that it is no bigger than your outspread hand ie 6 inches x 8 inches. So VCU, right?

Question/Frage: Has anyone here ever seen a SHOP Manual for the ED3, or any other Smart_EV?? Either Print or CD/DVD?? I have the hard copy OWNER's Manual, (also on CD if anyone wants it I'll mail to you).

Repair manuals stopped being created as early as 2009 that I personally know. My family took a hiatus from the Mercedes brand from 1992 to 2009 model year so somewhere in between I guess would be more accurate. They put their service information online at startekinfo.com, and charge a subscription fee to access this repair info. What I could do was subscribe and print the documents. What I would do was print them to .pdf using a printer emulator software such as PDFCreator. It's quite tedious but doable. When you log in you can search all relevant repair info based on your VIN.

EDIT-. More specific a smarttekinfo.com used to exist just for the smart brand. At some point that disappeared and they merged the two to startekinfo.com . This is my current understanding....

For my 2014 Chevy Spark_EV I ordered the GM Service Manual in printed form and 15 pounds, 3 volumes, arrived by mail. Same cost as the dvds but no chance of misplacing them!

For my 2014 Smart ED3 'battery-less beauty' the electrification project will resume soon. Exciting new development: latest idea is to perform mods to the VCU which will then activate the stock (untouched) inverter/motor combo to allow use of any old 300 +/- volt dc battery bank. Liberation of the ED3 might be achieved at another software level indeed. So hold onto your 'dead' Smart_EVs!

DVD manuals are available from several vendors, for example on eBay currently:

For Mercedes Benz ALL MODELS 1986-2020 Service Repair Manual (software) DVD | eBay

Most install some sort of VMware like OS simulator and run what appears to be the same software an M-B mechanic would use. All models are covered, including the electric smart and B-Class Electric models.

Warning, the software is painfully complicated to navigate, it's not just a bunch of PDFs.

I've also got the WIS. But as you say, it't a nightmare to use.

There is actually a handy shop manual, I've attached it to this post.

As far as I know, there is none.
