What year/model? If it's a 453 the battery is under the front hood. Earlier models have the battery under the floor in the passenger compartment. There are no external connections to jump start the car. :)
I wonder whether you can use one of those things that you put in your charger thing. I have used them when I can't be bothered to pull out the floor of my Smart Passion. That is an alternative jump point
"..one of those things that you put in your charger thing." isn't much detail. If you are thinking you could charge through the 12v outlet, the car has to be on for that outlet to work. :)
Not the 12volt outlet, the thing that you used to plug in a cigarette lighter to that is now for cell phone chargers ( sorry I am a girl) The gismo has two identical connectors, one goes into the outlet of the car without the flat battery and the other goes into the one that has the flat battery. I am the Queen of this ever since I set my Passion on fire when I had a short from my jumper cables.
These questions aren't gender related... The 12v outlet, in the center console, is what might look like a cigarette lighter - in fact, you could get one in the early days as a "smokers kit." To charge the battery through that outlet, the key has to be on.

Back feeding the 12V socket will result in the SAM and generating a fault code if the key is turned off. I've tried it.
It’s always handy to have one of these on hand. Life saver. Not issue to jump start any smart car. 451 the battery is under the passenger floor board. Why a alternative The 453 is under the plastic hood. Both batteries easy access. This unit will start any car fast.

That would be handy, if the OP could unlock the car. :)

Is “flat battery “ = DEAD battery?

Do you have access to the interior of the smart? How ‘bout a picture of THE “thing” or “gizmo”?

Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words???
Looks like a W451. Can't you pull out the plastic insert out of the lock and then jump battery afterward?

You can unlock the the car. Emergency key slot under drivers side door handle. My wife ran the battery down once. Left the head lamps on. I used the key slot to open the drivers side door. That safety feature, are on all modern cars. If that key slot is blocked up, time to call a lock smith, slim Jim the door open.

I wonder if a spray like P'Blaster will loosen up whatever is keeping the key from going into the lock?

Because at this point I think you're either going to have to figure out that lock or call a locksmith. I can't think of a way to charge the battery from outside the car.

Then again, OP hasn't returned so we still don't know if they're dealing with a 451 or 453.

Why do people ask a question, get 13 replies, and then never have the courtesy to thank the people who replied and tried to help?

I still think it's a 451 by the greyed out dash picture. I also am not a Matlock or Sherlock Holmes... Would be interesting to find out what the remedy was though.

The greyed out picture is from the 451 owners manual. No idea what model the OP actually has. :)
If it's a 451, the battery is dead and you are locked out the only way to power the car up would be to jack it up, remove the plastic cover over the starter and connect a battery charger there for a little while. DCO

Recent thread, same situation, so figured I'd post in case there are some ideas.
Daughter left the lights on, so the battery is now dead.
As described before - the remote key now doesn't work, so can't get in to jump start the battery. Tried using the regular key, but there's a piece of metal blocking it - looks like by design, so kinda strange (see pic).
It's 2014 Smart 451 with the battery inside on the passenger side.
Any options other than calling an auto locksmith?
Would appreciate any ideas!

I have battery tender attachment on all of my vehicles and equipment. This comes in handy whence ambient temperature is -15; unfortunate to a dead battery though.
