I just noticed that my the driver side door of my Smart won't lock (fortwo, 2014). To be clear, the hatch locks, the passenger side locks, just the driver side does not. I don't know how long it has been like this because when I lock the car there are the light flashes, sound, etc.

Listening closely to the driver side door I believe I can hear something when pressing the lock button, but not same as the locking sound.

Looking through the forums I saw notes about a cable either being broken or disconnected. However, I didn't see any additional details on how to determine this for sure (or if it could be another problem) or if this if this is a fix I could do on my own (moderately handy) or if it has to go to a mechanic.

Thanks for any help that can be offered!

The latch mechanisms are somewhat prone to getting gummed up, causing the latching mechanisms to stick and not spring back into place. In some cases, you can lubricate and exercise the mechanism for the outside using lithium grease or something similar. If it’s really bad, the lock mechanism will need to be removed, cleansed and lubricated. This means disassembling the door and loosening the aft window support to get the latch out.

Question for the Op. Have you tried to using your key, in the outside lock slot. See if you can lock/unlock the car with the key. If you can, it most likely your electronic lock actuator, is bad.

Good Luck!
Can you lock a 2014 using the key in the door?
My older 08 and 09 could only be unlocked with the key.
Or do you mean use the key to loosen the mechanism?

Sounds like you going to have to pull the outside door panel off. See if the locking mechanism linkage. Hasn’t fallen off. if the electric locking actuator, is still in good working condition.

Good Luck, let us know what you find.

MY08 smart, done the driver side door lock dive twice!

First time although I had sourced a used actuator, was pleasantly surprised to find the electrical plug wasn’t seated firmly. Life was good until a few months ago when it started acting up again.

As I still had a replacement part, I once again took the door skin off (a total PIA) and replaced the mechanism.

NOTE, at your “friendly” M-B emporium that’s a $700 job!!!

I had tried the manual door lock, nothing happened.
I was not sure about a 2014 being like my 08 or 09. But they are alike, meaning there is NO way to manually lock a 451 model smart.
I am sure you are well aware of this inconvenience by now.

With the outside key.
Nope can't be done.

No, the lock is on a cable, so you can only pull (unlock) with the key. :)
The outside lock will not lock the car and it is only there as an emergency to unlock the driver's door if the battery in the remote dies... if there are any issues with locking the car with the remote or inside switch then you might not have all the doors fully closed... the tailgate is commonly the issue

The problem is you can't "lock" the drivers door using the key hole by the handle. It is a cable device. Turn the key it pulls on the cable to open the lock. But you cant "push" the cable to lock it. Sorry.
