I usually hit the 97/98 mark. A few times it has made it to 100.

Think of it as a video game score - some days you play to win, other days you drive like you stole it and the score hardly matters . . .

I started doing, as you’re suggesting, with my ‘02 Honda Insight. It was nail-biting-edge-of-seat fun to work for every .1 MPG improvement. On Insight Central, we’d all share our top hypermiling tips. Now, having had many ‘lesser’ hybrids, regular ICEs, and the ED, I got weary of such obsessiveness... I had to quit recording each tankful of gas, or even paying attention constantly to my fuel economy. It was a cold-turkey quitting. Afterwards, I began sleeping better at night, not tossing-and-turning while strategizing how to score better in my digitized rolling arcade world. There is life after ECOscoring!!

Kcfoxie, What do you consider a Long trip?
Well, I did 421 miles to and from Myrtle Beach.... I've also taken the car to Greenville, NC and back (163 miles), and it's been to Greensboro. I have two more trips I'd like to do with it, at some point: Charlotte and Tail of the Dragon. I'm just waiting until my work project gets to the point that I can telework. I can cover about 240 miles per day in the little bugger (with the down time, of course: wake up, drive one hour, charge and work for 4, drive one hour on lunch, charge and work for 4, drive one hour to overnight stop). Given I paid $0 for these trips, I'm not going to gripe about the downtime. I've also driven a FIAT 500e 380 miles to deliver it to my friend in SC. And then there's my Zero Motorcycle's most recent trip to Myrtle Beach, and last weekend I was up in Garysburg with it to volunteer for the 22nd annual EV Challenge.

I guess anything over 40-miles one-way would be considered a "long trip," because charging is necessary to return home. On a given day, I can tool around the Triangle and clock up to 130 miles without a lot of effort..charging at destinations (work, shopping, parks). Short range EVs, with a 32A on board charger (like the 453 has) are only hindered for "long trips" by the lack of infrastructure. Thankfully, that's going to be changing in the coming months with the VW settlement money.

100% ECO is relatively easy. Just need a long enough trip and learning how to utilize forward momentum without needlessly applying throttle, and learning how to utilize regenerative energy recuperation while coasting and/or braking. The smart 451 is easy, the 453 is a little more challenging. :nerd:

That's pretty amazing! A few days ago, we managed to get about 150 miles in one day, all on 120 volt using the supplied EVSE, and thought we had done good. We drove about 85 miles in the morning and had it down to just under 10% SOC, then it sat on the charger for about 10 hours where it got back up to about 90%, and we drove it about another 65 miles, getting it down to around 15%, before charging it back up overnight. I don't see beating that mileage ever.

Some of you guys are HARDCORE. I only utilize the smart 451 EV for work-home-home-gym-work-shopping-movietheater-shopping-work-home-gym-work-home-shopping-gym-home-postoffice-restaurant-work-home type trips.

The 451 EV is literally for work-home. The 453 EV is much more usable thanks to its much more powerful onboard charger and much improved charging times.

For example. I have delivered numerous smart 451 EV's to the Palm Springs/Palm Desert area. From West Covina you're looking at about 90 to 120 miles. I never bothered to personally drive the smart 451 there.

The 453? No problem. I drive it about 50-60 miles out, charge in Redlands for about 60 to 90 minutes, and then arrive in Palm Springs or Palm Desert areas with anywhere from 50% to about 20% SOC. The 453 is much more usable for "beyond range" trips. :nerd:

In our case, it was not our intention to drive it that much, but our 451 ED is really the perfect vehicle for running around in town. Most of the miles in the morning were just going from one place to another, and we drove around for probably three hours in accumulating all that mileage. Later at night, we had to do a bunch more urban running around and it was the obvious choice to take the smart again.

Yeah, I think most people would opt to take something different. I mostly want to get the mileage up so that I can either cash in the battery warranty or point to the car and say "what's your excuse now?" when the question of battery longevity comes up.

Mister_smart_LA - now if you had an Android phone we could verify your 451 ED "usage" with Google tracking!

, YOU ARE THE EV MAN! "Cash in on the battery warranty" - are you on the BAP program or the Daimler/smartUSA CARB mystery warranty?

Dunno that having a certain orifice "puckered" for a 421 mile MB RT is my idea of "sport?" Do give me a "heads up" on your TOD adventure - might meet you with our ICE, extension cord isn't long enough for Sparky. :worship:

Are you doing all the charging on the L1 EVSE when you can't find a L2 commercial charger or are you also carrying a plug & play L2 that can be used at a campground?

And if you plan a CLT "run" do give me a heads up . . .
