167 for December ... makes it #3 highest selling EV

December 2013 Plug-In Electric Vehicle Sales Report Card

"SMART ForTwo Electric Drive: Despite only being available regionally, the smart ED continues to put up strong numbers (relatively speaking) – for December 167 were sold.

Quirky fact of the 2nd half? The smart ED was the 3rd best selling pure electric vehicle for the last 6 months of 2013 with 750 units sold."

Looks like total U.S. Smart ED sales in 2013 was just under 1000
Smart-all models-sold about 11,000 units in the U.S. in 2013, the only mfg's that sold less were companies like Ferrari, Maserati and Lamborghini.

In comparison, Mercedes Benz had about 335,000 total sales in the U.S.
That sounds like a lot, and it is, until you see some figures like

734,000 Ford F-150's were sold in the USA in 2013,
Over 400,000 Camry's sold. LOL, more Camrys sold than the total of all Mercedes models combined.

We are not making a big dent in the fossil-fuel transportation marketplace.
But we are unusual little fishies in a very big pond.

How big is the pond? 15.6 million new automobiles sold in the USA in 2013

So us Smart drivers in the USA make up about 7/100ths of a percent of the new vehicles on the road. If you see 1500 one-year old or newer cars today, one of them is likely to be a Smart. You will have to see at least 15,000 new cars for the odds to be that one of them is a Smart ED. The good news is that it is easy to pick us out from the crowd...

The way I see this is that Smart is an exclusive car. I realize that it's price is not exclusive, that anyone could buy one and that it's only a two-seater. But even sports cars only have two seats.

The Camry and the F150 are for "normal" or "average" people. The Smart is for eccentric, practical, people who want to save money and have the best maneuverability this side of a motor bike. We're an elite club. :nerd:

March 2014 Plug-In Electric Vehicle Sales Report Card

SMART ForTwo Electric Drive: Every month 6 plug-in cars battle it out for the top spot. Then there are 10 other cars that compete for the crown in the “B division”

This month the electric smart takes home the consolation championship as Daimler sold a personal best 186 copies in March!

The smart ED also was one of the leaders for the smaller regional players previously in February, with a “not too shabby at all“ 122 sales during the month.

Ditto for January, when a very respectable 97 smart EDs – that after selling amazing 167 in December.

The Smart ED had it's best US sales month ever in April 2014 selling 203. :D

April 2014 Plug-In Electric Vehicle Sales Report Card

SMART ForTwo Electric Drive: Every month 6 plug-in cars battle it out for the top spot. Then there are 10 other cars that compete for the crown in the “B division” of which the smart ED is one.
And it seems like 2-seat electric smart is destined to stay the leader of this group as 203 more were sold in April

I like the new spreadsheet that shows all Electric models, thanks for compiling it.

Smart sold 206 electric drive models in May 2014.

Recap : Smart USA in April 2014 sold 1048 compared to 667 in April 2013 (+57%)

Of that 381 additional cars sold, the electric was 203 of those, so more than 50% of the increase year over year is due to the new electric model availability.

The electric has been around 20-25% of Smart Fortwo sales since November 2013.

Yeah!

June 2014 Plug-In Electric Vehicle Sales Report Card

SMART ForTwo Electric Drive: Someone has to be smiling at Daimler’s HQ this month as the smart Ed almost took out the BMW i3 for sales in June.
Somehow, an astounding 278 fully electric smarts were sold in June – that’s a new record high – for the 4th month in a row! Considering the brand as a whole only sold 673 cars, EV sales easily accounted for more than 50% of the automotive revenue for smart in June.

July 2014 Plug-In Electric Vehicle Sales Report Card

The smart EV is turning into the surprise hit of 2014, as the company set another sales record in July with 298 sold! Of note, that was the 5th consecutive monthly record for the ED. Someone has to be smiling at Daimler’s HQ both this month and last as the smart Ed almost took out the BMW i3 for sales during both months.
Previously, an astounding 278 fully electric smarts were sold in June.
