Next month, my 4 year factory warranty will expire. I’m curious what the general thought is here at SCOA about continuing to take the car to the Smart Center every 10,000 Miles after the warranty period. I don’t really see the point and I’m wondering how much of that maintenance work I can just do myself or have done at a regular local garage. I realize anything to do with the power system will always go back to Smart. But everything else should be doable locally, right? Thoughts?

Chris - you're talking about an EV right? Almost no maintenance to do on it and what there is you can easily do yourself - brake fluid and desiccant cartridge and maybe cabin air filter every two years and run a battery test every year or so. You can make, borrow or buy the battery test unit and that's an easy DIY.

Yes, it’s an ED. I thought I posted this in the ED thread. Did I? I use the Tapatalk app to post and it looks that way on this end. But I never doubt my ability to screw that up.

What kind of battery test could I do on my own? I’ve heard some talk of doing this on this forum but I’ve never looked in to doing it. What are the benefits other than knowledge gained? Can I do anything with the data?

Yep, you did post in the ED forum. Smark retracted his comments. :)

There are a couple of long threads on the home made battery tester, what it does and what it tells. My son made one for me and my other son and it gives me a whole lot of peace of mind to know the state of my battery. It is nice to be able to compare your results to other results posted on the forum. You can build your own or I can check with my son. He was talking about offering to build units for guys interested if he had the time.

My first car was a Mercedes back in '92 when the fancy Star Machines didn't even exist. I try to do as much as possible, even with the fancy new machines which cost $20k just to lease. At least you don't have to mess with dirty/used oil. Every 2 years the brake fluid should be changed as far as I know. (I personally have a Branick pressure bleeder for that job). Also I do believe the dessicant cartride needs changing every two years as well.....

Give me some instructions and I can probably supply every ED owner on SCoA with one...assuming I have the tools. :)

I'll take a unit if he's willing to build them!
Okay, I'll check with him. I think he was hoping to get some time to build some over the winter. Plus we've got Miss Mercedes in the mix now too.

A search in the EV forum will bring up the instructions and the coding.
