It's the Mercedes M281. It arose out of a development partnership between MB, Renault, Nissan, Dacia and Mitsubishi, but although involved in the project Mitsubishi have never actually manufactured it themselves or used it in any or their vehicles.

Although when fitted to the Smart it has a Mercedes model number, it is actually manufactured by a subsidiary of Renault in Slovenia as the Renault H4D (normally aspirated) and H4Bt (turbo). When then engines arrive at Hambach those cheeky French lads crowbar the lid off the crate and rename them as the Mercedes M281. Presumably they baptise them or something to confirm the sudden name change.

That may be true for the 453, but not the 451 - and we didn't get the 453 in the US until the 2016 model year. A US spec 2015 451 has the Mitsu 3B21 engine... :)

The OP says his is a 2015 car, which would make it a 453. The 451 ceased to be built in June 2014. it doesn't then become a 2015 car because the importer didn't sell it to anyone for a year. Jolly deceiving.

Perhaps the OP could clarify when his car was built, and not when the first owner purchased it, and thus avoid confusion? ;)

The 451 for the US and Canada continued to be built and sold in those two markets for model years 2014 and 2015.....as did the 451 ED. :)
