I just took my 2009 Smartcar in for oil change (56,000 miles) and was told that I need to change the engine mounts.
I live in AZ and I can not believe that they would go bad with such low mileage? Seems to me that the car vibrates more now than before I got the oil changed. I love my Smartcar and want to keep it in good condition but $1000 for replacing the engine mounts. Any suggestions ? Thanks, Julie

That's them ripping you off. The 'dog bone' does get bad when the rubber inside it gets torn up. A "dog bone" (middle motor mount) is about $40 and can be done in minutes if one has a garage. If all three are replaced, you can buy a set off Amazon for about $100.00 and get them replaced for maybe an hour's worth of labor.

Thank you! Is there anyway of telling if they are really bad besides the shops opinion?
Clunking noise if you hit a pot hole! Look in your engine compartment and underneath! My engine mounts were so bad that it hit metal to metal - the rubber totally disintegrated...
