My brother was driving the smart car and ended up stranded on side of road after the engine unexpectedly died while driving. We had to get it towed.
I put in a OBD2 reader and got code p0336 which seems to be the crank position sensor. Is this the part that needs to be replaced? The smart has only 19k miles on it.

I have tried starting the car, but i just hear it crank and not start. Could it be another electrical issue?

Car battery is new this year. I also recharged the car battery but that didn't help at all... A bad car batery shouldn't cause it to stop while driving right? Only concern with battery is that i bought it from an OReilly's and who knows how long it was sitting there previously.

Crank sensor sounds like a good place to start, and not difficult to replace. :)

So i finally was able to change the crankshaft position sensor. When trying to startup, i noticed a change in that the engine starts cranking then dies and stops. What could the issue be? I don't think it is the crankshaft position sensor.

Check your oil just in case, if it looks like a chocolate milkshake you have blown your head gasket. But does also sound like a fuel pump or fuel related issue.
