Fan noise

Since it's been warm enough to need AC, I've noticed a loud fan noise when sitting in still traffic. Even some noise when the AC is off on the hottest day so far. I had the same issue with our first Smart and it finally broke and overheated the engine destroying it.

Is there an easier way to work around this than what I've watched on YouTube pulling basically the entire front off the car? And only then putting the same fan system on that will break again???

If the fan is making noise then it's most likely an internal bearing issue. Either that or there is something caught in the fan shroud like playing cards on bicycle spokes. Honestly, I wouldn't be too concerned with a new fan failing quickly. I would be more concerned with NOT replacing the fan and having the engine overheat. A new fan is a small price to pay for that peace of mind.
I don't mind paying the price of a new fan. Just paying for it to be installed or me trying it myself.
Yep, some parts are an easy fix and sometimes hard to get to.
I just checked out the video……Darn…It’s like giving it a face lift

I didn't mean "price" monetarily. Yeah, it's a hassle to swap it out yourself but it's harder to yank an engine when it pops.

These fans are in the worst place anyway, you can’t even reach the thing just to see if it’s can spin to see if it’s stuck somehow let let alone to remove it
Cooling fans, on any modern car, are hard to replace. The smart cars is pretty easy just screw on plastic body panels. A couple hours of labors, good music and a few beers. Easy Peezy.

curious why your cooling fans are failing. How many miles on your vehicle. My bar is close to 14.5 years old. over a couple 100k miles. Still running the original one.

I’ve gone thought several blower motor fans, over the years.
I had to replace mine recently. It isnt as difficult as it seems, the parts all come off with just a few bolts. I did it in an afternoon. Do be aware though that to reach it you have to take the condenser for the radiator off, which will make you lose your ac charge so you'll need to buy a can of refrigerant and oil if you change it. If you care much about your health or the environment I'd take it to a shop and have them drain it for you first.

So wait, I was under the impression you can change it without messing with the charge for AC.

Unfortunately no, not as far as I'm aware. The AC condenser is attached to the fan housing body so you have to remove it to replace the fan
Thanks! On one video I saw them do that, and refill on reverse. It wasn't clear, but I assumed they were emptying the radiator at disassembly point, then refilled at beginning of re: assembly. I was wondering at this point about A/C recharge etc.
