I had a noise in my 451 engine that I self diagnosed as the cam advance. I purchased the pressure control valve thinking it would solve my problem. I put the new valve in and had no change in the noise.

End of the story is I purchased a new 2016 Smart Prime.

If anyone can use the valve I took out, please respond and I will send it to you. This part is over $100 so "free" is a good deal.

just out of curiosity, how do (or did) you "self diagnose" a "cam advance"? which obviously was a bad diagnosis. for the last 5 years i've lived with excessive tire noise and a high performance exhaust. i got new tires a few weeks ago, now i can hear wind noise and other things in my 9 year old smart. nothing troubling to me. Mitsubishi makes some great engines, when smart switched over to Renault, i got worried, Renault has a bad rep in the states, the R8, R10 and finally the R5 aka "LeCar" almost 30 years ago, i test drove an R5 in '88, and chose a Subaru Justy instead and drove that for 10 years.

if i do get rid of my smart for another vehicle, it'll be a nissan, toyota or maybe an elio, if he ever makes one! 9 years ownership in a few weeks, my smart is holding up fine!

That's the problem. I took a WAG (wild a--ed guess) and I was wrong. I am used to American iron and I always purchase a shop manual from Helm for each of my vehicles. The lack of good documentation for these vehicles drives me nuts. I have never been one to take a vehicle back to the dealer and listen to all the BS that is normally issued. I am way too anal for that. So...I just bought a new Smart and I am living with its weird noises. My dealer is 80 miles away (I live in the country) and I have learned I can't even buy a replacement oil filter cartridge for my 453 in the after market. Not to my liking at all! But, I need the Smart as it is the only vehicle along with my V8 Trike that will fit inside the enclosed trailer I tow behind my motorhome.
