OK, I have several questions about the fuel gage:
1. 7/8th has happened twice, but don't know why.
2. Is the .7 Gal reserve used first, so that the indication you get below 1 Gal. is actual reading of fuel remaining?
3. Last fill-up I was indication .6 Gal. remaining, but put 8.7 Gal. in, so I'm confused about the actual fuel tank capacity. Has anyone else experienced this? Are we just getting ripped off by the gas stations not being acurate?

I got the car as an orphan 11/08 and have 5,002 miles and really enjoy the car, but want to get a degree of comfort with the fuel quantity indicating system. I have looked through the forums and have seen some info, but not about the "reserve" issue. THX!!!

OK, The 7/8 issue when full is well known by smart and while many have had it "Fixed" I don't know if it realy has been resolved. Its not unusual.

The reason Duckhunter responded the way he did is because this issue has been discussed at great lengh with no real resolution.

If you don't feel comfortable pushing it, then fill up when you get to the last bar. One time I pushed it and that next station was further than I thought and I drove in 5 miles past 0.0. It was a 400 Mile tank

Today when I filled up, this crazy SUV was sitting right behind me waiting to use the exact pump I was using. Even though there were 5 other pumps available and when it clicked off the first time, they started reving the motor and flashing their lights when I was trying to wait a bit to finish pumping (usually 30 sec to 1 min) so I topped it one more click and moved away so they could use the only pump they could use I guess.. I ended up with 7/8 tank reading. Not that it matters, I'll need more in a couple of days. Car is 5 weeks old and has almost 4,000 miles.

I recently had the opportunity to talk directly with our Smart technician about this and he says that Smart has a software update to correct this problem. I had the update applied a few weeks ago when my Smart was in the shop for some other work.

7/8th indication after a fill-up happened pretty regularly before the update. After? No problems since.

To all the commenters, thanks and sorry about raising an 'old' issue, but that is one of the shortfalls of being a FNG. I still didn't find an answer to part of my question-is the .7 gal. reserve at the end of the tank? Dave777, you're right-confusion. I have to visit the shop and so will ask the tech. If I get any answer, I'll post the result.

0.7gal? Don't ask.

Some have filled their tank with 10gal while sputtering into the filling station when their car still registers a few miles left.

I can fill my car with 8 1/4 to 8 3/4 gallons of gas when I regularly run to very low miles left on the gallon-o-meter. I have gone 20 miles past empty but having checked how much fuel there is when at 0.1gal left, I don't think I would have made it to 25.

So - it depends on your specific car as to how much fuel you have at 0.0gal, if any. It also depends on your specific car as to how much gas fits in for "full." (and perhaps the gas pump and filling technique, too)

Just don't push it unless you're willing to run out of gas.
