I purchased a 451 2009 Passion Cabriolet a couple of months ago and it smelled of raw gasoline. Turns out one of the plastic tubes coming into the fuel pump was cracked. When the mechanic inspected the fuel pump the tube broke off. We decided to replace the fuel pump rather than mess with any repairs involving glue or tape.

I paid too much but the good news is that my local garage in Mt Holly NC was able to order the pump and install it same day. I've read horror stories about parts availability and mechanics resistance to working on the car but none of those stories were true in my case.

It cost me just over a thousand. Labor was $350 and the part was $650 approximately. I know that MB Online Parts lists the pump around $400 with shipping etc. I decided not to wait and got the job done right away without the hassle of ordering, waiting etc etc. If I had a lift at home I would have done it myself but these days I don't crawl around the garage floor that well. :)

Was that with the sending unit
Not sure what you mean...... I replaced the entire fuel pump, float and all... the photo is of the top where the hoses attach. The parts manual describes it as a delivery unit which apparently includes the fuel guage sending unit. I replaced #s 9, 10 and 11 in this diagram. #9 has a lot more pieces not shown in the diagram (float etc)

I'm reopening this thread as I think the job is not finished. All was well after the mechanic replaced the fuel pump but lately there is a strong smell of fuel immediately after I fill 'er up.

I suspect the culprit may be the filler neck and return "hose" (what's the real name for the overflow bit?)

1. Is that second pipe a return/overflow pipe?
2. Does it connect to the newly installed fuel pump?
3. If it came loose would it spill fuel on the ground?

Is part #5 in the diagram a return hose?

Where does it connect back to the fuel system?

The fuel smell, is from your evaporator canister.
Would the smell continue on in this case?
There is no more gasoline smell. I've re-read the "overfilling" threads and think this is the thing that makes the most sense. I'm going to try a couple of half tanks to see if it makes a difference.
