After the initial shut off, I hold the vapor recovery system open by hand and insert the nozzle just past the opening, filling very slowly and can always get 5 gallons more past shut off.

5 GALLONS!!!!! I think you mean .5 gallon (1/2 gallon)

Nope. 5 full gallons. With the way the shut off valves at California pumps work, from a tank on reserve, it shuts off automatically at about 5 gallons after which I can put in another 5 full gallons. I can easily get 400 miles per tank.

I got 400 miles on the last tank at 36.9 mpg tank average (453 3rd screen).

I bring two 5 gallon fuel cans and I get 5.1 gallons in each one.

The 453 fuel gauge only seems accurate when the low fuel light is on and the remaining fuel shows on the bottom right.

Beyond that, most fuel pumps shut off (click) at 6 gallons, except in CA lol, filling from the low fuel light (0 to 1.3 gallons).

Total Fuel Capacity on a 453 is around 11 gallons; you just have to go slow after click off.

I use two of these: https://www.amazon.com/Justrite-Galvanized-AccuFlow-Flexible-Hazardous/dp/B07N8GMB87/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1549524340&sr=8-1&keywords=Justrite+7250130

With 5/8" spouts (important): https://www.amazon.com/Justrite-11078-Diameter-Hoses-Safety/dp/B007F1YGHU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1549524237&sr=8-1&keywords=Justrite+5/8

$90 total each but these are the only cans I found that I can carry in the passenger compartment and not smell gas.
Especially since I get E0 91 which has a stronger gas smell than E10.

The 5/8" spouts let air displace with the filler flap open.
My routine is let the low fuel light read 0.5 gallons, then I empty the two gas cans for a total of 10.7 gallons.

A note on the E0 - did you ever see water dripping out a tailpipe? That's because of cheap gas - E10 - the ethanol added also adds water. E10 might be a cause of rusted flex pipes.

Also E0 needs no stabil to store for long periods of time and doesn't 'lose' octane over time.
