It always annoys me when someone refers to Nitrous Oxide (N2O) as an emission component. The correct term is Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx). Good article though.

Well, you're damned if you do damned if you don't with these small engines. Everybody wants the world. Customers want them to zoom like big engines, save more fuel like small engines should, engineers want them to develop the most power to have a competitive edge, but the government wants to keep emissions to a minimum. Develop more power with these tiny engines and bring compression up, combustion temps go up, NOx shoots up during on-road tests, EGR systems rob power but they clean up emissions... no perfect world.

If NOx is going to be a new major target, then there'll be no choice but to start increasing engine displacements. It all depends on what emissions regulations are coming in the pipelines. When it comes to ICE's... pick your poison!

I give it 10 years before EV's begin to outsell ICE's...
