Sunday my SUV died. I had a friend who was selling his 2008Smart fortwo with a new engine. I jumped on it since it was affordable.
I was excited to hear that the top comes off since I've always wanted a convertible. I would be thrilled if I have the option of replacing it with a soft top for the warmer months.

Is this even possible? I am paralyzed on one side so removing a hard top and putting it back on would be a pain to say the least.

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to SCoA!!!! :D

As for the car, well it depends. The American smarts come in two flavours, cabrio and hardtop. The cabrios do have removable roof rails that turn the roof from "open fabric roof" configuration to a full open convertible, but there aren't any variations of inbetween cabrio/coupe.

So I assume one of two things is happening here: He has a cabrio and when he describes "top comes off" he's talking about the roof rails. OR, he has a coupe and he could have modded it to be a targa-type thing?

For reference, here is a cabrio with the roof rails on:

And a cabrio with the roof rails off:

And a coupe:

Is it possible to have my coupe modified after market to have a cabrio functionality?
Unfortunately no. I mean, there are a few folks here who made their coupes have an opening sunroof using an aftermarket vent, but that's as far as a coupe is going to get to having an open air roof. :(

Now look where I live in Redneckville anything is possible with a little help from a sawzall.
Well, if we're breaking out a saw, might as well go all the way and make a crossblade!
