Hello Gents and Ladies,

I have 2013 Smart, My wife decided to drive it with no water pump belt and smoked the engine. Ok, found a motor, swapped it out easy enough.

Got the car started, the motor seem fine. I went to put in in gear and the shifter would not come out of park. So I went thru the retraining process and no luck.

So I stopped working on it for the evening and when I came out the next day, The car will not even start now.

There is the 3 lines on the dash, will not start, will come out of park unless i use the yellow button, but that does not matter.

I did alot of research and have tried everything. I even bought a new shifter for it.

It does throw the code for transmission not training, I cant remember the number off the top of my head, and the ABS brake light is on. I did have that all unhooked and I figured it needed to roll to get the ABS light to go off. I am not sure on these cars, but alot of cars the light will go off once it starts seeing the rings move on the axle.

So, three lines on the dash, no start, wont come out of park, new shifter, new brake light switch. ABS light on, brake light on, Check engine light on. When you try to train the tranny, no noise from the motor on the tranny. I took it off and cleaned it up, there seem to be nothing wrong with it.

Cant get it the tranny out of park so I can roll it and get it to a dealer. I had no issues before the motor swap.

Anyone helps me fix this, I will send you a nice Christmas gift :)

I usually can figure it out, but this one has me stumped.

When in doubt, re-boot? In other words, disconnect the battery for a few minutes and try again. Oh, here's another variation/idea... Turn the key on, then disconnect the battery for a few minutes. Re-connect the battery. You have a code reader, have you tried to clear the error codes?

Is the clutch actuator adjusted correctly and operating? If the clutch isn't disengaging you would get a no start.
Thanks,

I put it back on the lift and clutch is not engaging/ I took it off and open it up and it looks clean inside. Nothing froze up.

Trying to find the pin layout so I put power to it and test it.

Where can a guy buy one of these beside Mercedes and russia off ebay?

Did you follow the procedure to align it? If there is not the right amount of play to engage and disengage the actuator it will not work.

Just reread post from the start.
Couple of weeks ago I was driving along, pulled in to get mail and the car jerked and engine quit.
Would not crank over, click or anything.
Remembered not hearing the usual clutch actuator noise so figured that was problem.
Took actuator out and sure enough end of motor broken.
Had a spare so put it in and still no go.
3 bars etc.
Took load tester and checked battery.
Bingo bad battery.
What are the odds the actuator broken and the battery went dead at the same time?
New battery and all is well.....till I exchange the current motor with one that doesn't have a burnt valve.
My advice...make absolutely positively sure the battery is OK as in load tested!

I have had this happen to me but my car was running. I could not get it to leave park. I kept trying. Now I know to try and shove it over to the side and it works. This has happened to me several times and I have to stop and remember what I have to do to get it tout of park. 2009 Bra. I also hit bumps and my fane stops. I have to hit another bump or hit the dash or mess with wires under the dash. My Smart Car has bugs but I love it.

Same thing happened to me checked the battery only to find out after all these years the wrong battery was fitted in the car.

When the car get stressed with auxiliary like stereo and air condition it use to jerk heavy and wouldn’t shift into gears eventually replaced actuator but still had same problems checked the battery and load tested it sure enough it was the culprit.

Guys I’m going crazy :( I installed the new battery but the problems still consist getting error codes P0805 & P0900. When the car is idling for a few mins in traffic it stalls and won’t engage gear.
I turn of the ignition for 2 mins it starts again and engages head but idled really rough all the time the engine light is on.

Can someone please help me I’ve spent too much money on this car.

Well rule number one is do not sit stopped with a Smart car in gear. Would you sit in gear with the clutch down that long at traffic lights in a normal manual car?

Because it is an automated manual gearbox you should never sit in gear for a long time.

Where are you?

Do you have access to a Star system? You need to read the fault codes with something capable.

I had the car for 3 years and I noticed the only time it would do that if I was parked up for a long time stationary with the engine on listening to music and air con it will stress the battery.

The problem occurred one recently as I was parked up and ac on and listening to music the car just stalled and wouldn’t engage gears. Had to get it towed.

Fitted it with new clutch actuator and it shifted gears but the problem still consist. I also brought a new battery. Could it be the alternator or a sensor?
