hello, y'all.

just joined the smart*family, yesterday. now the owner of a 2012*451 Passion.*new to the smart world. only recently became interested in the idea of owning a smart. had been looking*into*buying a new car due to my*[read: previous] car*costing more and more in maintenance cost.*after looking at multiple cars over multiple weeks, I landed on the smart.*this past Sunday, I test drove two. thought I found the one I wanted, went in to buy it,*discover another that was*on hold, loved it*even more.*got lucky, and ended up with that one just two days after discovering it. and here I am...

being new and not sure what to say*exactly... i'll just jump right in to the questions I have.
01.*where can I obtain an OEM service manual? and what's the cost? any alternatives? yes, I've downloaded the electronic version, just wanting to have an actual copy to keep in*the car.
02.*what sunshade are y'all using? there are three on smartmadness.com ranging between*$29.99-$59.99.*what's the difference? one better than another? fyi. I do have a rain sensor.
03. is*a sun roof shade worth it?
04.*anybody using an UltraGauge? I just*bought one. haven't fired it up, yet.

think that's all for now. hope to hear what y'all have to say. and thanks in advance!

Welcome to SCoA from Just a few hours south of you.

Looks like you're well on your way to outfitting your smart.

1. Not sure but eBay seems to be a good choice. Depending on where you bought your smart, some dealers (carmax for example) will reimburse you for cost of manual.

2. I bought a set of shades from a company called "heat shield" that was on amazon. When I found it it was on sale for quite a bit less, but came with windshield, driver, passenger, roof and rear window shades.

3. Right now a shade for the roof is not so important/needed. In the summer you will want one. It gets hot as hell in there in Central Valley sun.

4. Love my UltraGauge, but didn't like the mounting options so I got an a-pillar mount from proclips online and Velcro'd the clip onto it.

Here's the fit of Intro-Tech's Ultimate Reflector:

Couldn't quite put into words how it fits. Got them for a few cars as I like their warranty policy...

(You must be a computer guy. I remember "Hello, World" from CS101).

Welcome!!!

There is a Service and Warranty Information booklet that came in the owners manual packet. It lists what is supposed to be done when.

sorry, for the late reply. I can't seem to access this site on my computer, and it's a pain to quote and reply on my phone. whelp, I found the time to reply on this little screen...

and thank you for all the pictures!
Welcome to SCoA, somewhere in California....

I picked up a second manaul on eBay .. One in the car and one in the house ☺
I figured eBay would be a good place to search. that site has everything! was hoping for a more brick n mortar type store. and yes, somewhere in California. haha. I can be particularly vague at times.

1. yep, that's exactly why I'm looking. dealer will reimburse any cost to acquire one. plus always found it nice to have available in the glove box.
2. any chance you have a link to that Amazon listing? I've tried HeatShield and SmartMadness. so expensive. SM was cheaper, but shipping brought the price to similiar numbers.
4. I still haven't found / made the time to set up the UltraGauge. it's just sitting around being unused. what gauges do you use? I haven't decided where I wanted to mount it, yet. I like the A-pillar idea, never thought of that. was thinking maybe under the unlock/lock switches, but that might get in the way of grabbing any drinks in the cup holders.
*Welcome* to *SCoA! :)
thanks!
Service manual, or Owner's Manual, or both? Sorry, but there's a significant difference. Service manual may only be found in digital form so far as I know...
Owner's Manual. actually didn't know which I wanted. sorry for the confusion.

I hadn't thought of the warranty... maybe something I'll have to look into. thanks. and yes, the title is definitely a computer reference. nice catch.

I'm not very creative. I use Tach, speedo, average mph, distance to empty, average mpg, temp.

That's the beauty of these things! you can always change it if you need to. I have a ScangaugeII from back in 2008, and I mostly wanted to track motor temp and MPG so I added MPH and Tach just for the heck of it. I am limited to only 4 displays but that is all need I guess.

I always get asked if it is some sort of radar scrambler or scanner, I just smile...

Before I got my larger tires, I used it to show actual MPH. and when my alternator quit, I used it to check volts as I drove home. And occasionally when I get an error code, I can check and reset it if I need to.
Well worth it to have one on the car!

I added the loop part of velcro and it sticks on the dash in front of the instrument panel si I can glance at it when i am driving.

finally set mine up. haven't bought a mount for it, yet, though. still undecided where I want to mount it, actually. where did you get the mount you have? I'm using tach, speedo, avg mpg, tank size, distance to empty, and engine load. ...thinking I'll switch to load to temp, though.
Unfortunately they raised the price sky high. I got lucky and found mine for under $50. Think it was mis priced or on super special.
searched on Amazon for that. seller doesn't have anything available for the fortwo, unfortunately. thank you for finding that, though.

anybody notice the speed on the guage being different than the speed on the speedometer? 50mph on the speedometer is 46.6mph on the UltraGauge. could this be because smart didn't calibrate for the different rim/tires options?

They still have them for sale. This is the complete set but under other items it should pull up individual pieces.

COMPLETE PKG Custom-fit Sunshade for SMART FORTWO COUPE 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015

The mount I found online at proclips here.
thanks for the links, Johannesl.
The speedo is off. Gauge I have gps confirmed to be accurate.
figured that was the case. disappointing, but assumed.
sadly, i don't think windshield placement is allowed in California. only the corner 5in is usable on the driver's side.

in related news, I finally decided to go with that a pillar mount from ProClipUSA. I ordered it this morning. hopefully, I get it before the week's over! and also purchased my first tank of gas yesterday.
