Hey guys, my girlfriend bought a smart car almost a year ago and its been working fine but now its been happening a few times where her key will lock and unlock the car perfectly fine, nothing abnormal. but when she gets in and puts the key in the ignition, there is the key symbol on the dash that wont go away and show N or R or whatever which means its still in anti-theft mode.

When this happens she is literally stranded and cant go anywhere since obviously the car wont start. The last time this happened it took 4 days before it finally disengaged, then drove it around fine. Now this morning it happened again, no clue how long it will be until it will work again.

She already made an appointment with Mercedes, but there is quite a wait time. Is there anything we can do at home to try and fix this? I have mechanic experience, but I typically didnt ever deal with electrical issues, only mechanical issues.

Please tell us the year of your Smart. Also since you are in the 450 forum, it could be gasoline or diesel. Those details might be helpful.

Welcome to SCoA Forum
Seeing as how 450's were never officially imported here, help maybe somewhat limited.
Good luck and take care

If you open the door and take longer that 2 minutes to start the car... it puts the car in anti-theft mode.
Simple solution. Press the lock-doors button on the key then the unlock-doors button and the anti-theft will go away. Thenn you can start normally.

Works for me.

Yup tried that, many times, doesnt work. It locks and unlocks the car, but doesnt disable the anti-theft.

Also tried replacing the battery of course. And did it quickly since I know that if the battery is dead for more than 2 minutes it messes with the computer
