The battery has gone flat on my 08 451.
I unlocked the door with the key and removed the battery to charge it. When I went back to the car the key won't lock it. So it unlocked it fine but won't lock it, it there something I'm not doing???

Nope.
You can NOT lock a 451' s door lock with the key, only unlock it.
In a real car you have most often have push rods connected to lock and unlock the door.
Smart has a cable that is used to unlock only.

Any idea how I can lock the car without a battery?

Nope, there really isn't. Smart's engineer's designed the smart to always have a good battery. Sorry.
At times this car is a challenge to own.
Really your only choice you have is, take everything of value out and leave it unlocked until you get a new battery. Good luck

Managed to get enough juice in the battery to lock it, seems like a crazy design.

Nah, since a majority of the car is plastic the rigid linkages pose an impaling risk to your body in an accident. Wouldn't want to come out of an accident with one of those stuck in you...

Can't agree with you and and stand by my assumption.
Other manufacturer's use plastic or fiberboard door cards the same as smart only they have steel on the other side and still manage to have a way to unlock and Lock your car door.
Here's a thought how about two cables, lock and unlock, pull and pull from different directions. Just sayin'.

Kind of a moot point, since the car is not sold here anymore and will not be redesigned. It is what it is.
