[HELP] Shaking Coolant

1786 Views 5 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  dhlairbusb4
I have a 2012 Smart Fortwo Pure (451). Got it around 6 weeks ago.

When I start the vehicle the coolant shakes a bit too much and the noise its loud. At first I thought it had to do with using the AC. Since the first time I used the AC, such event occurred. Hence, I stopped using the AC so far.
After it happened at least three to four times that same day, it stopped. A month later, to today, it started to happen again. Has anyone experienced such event, if so, how did you solve it? Or does anyone have any idea as to what can be the issue? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Don't wanna take it to the mechanic if its something that is simple to fix. My simplest solution will be to put firm pressure by tying it with some kinda small lasso to stop it from shaking.

In order for me to transition the situation, I feel its better if I can show you guys a small video clip of it. However, since I'm new to the community, I'm not allow at the moment.

Yes, a short video would help. Are you referring to the coolant tank, under the hood, bonnet, flap thing?
If so, It should be mounted to something, and if not, has part of the tank broken off. Yes, you could use zip ties,
or some duct tape as a temp fix... but you really should get it fixed properly. To install a new tank should not
be too hard, but you will loose some coolant, so be sure to have some new coolant standing by.

by "shaking coolant' is is possible you have air bubbles and what you are hearing is 'splashing' of the coolant

No, the whole coolant tank shakes a bit fast (back and forth). Nothing seems to be loosen and things seem in their place. This happens very few times, but I rather getting fix so as to prevent any future problems.
There should not be anything shaking under the flap, unless your driving over rail road tracks! Then a slight vibration could be expected. The only thing that might cause a vibration, may be the radiator fan, if its loose maybe it is hitting a coolant line causing it to flail about... it that is the case, get it looked at asap, other wise you may leak out all the coolant and over heat the motor.
