First of all, I want to thank Len Sokoloff and his son for making the battery test units available. Len, a huge thanks! This is a fantastic service to the smart ED owner community, and the case with smart logo is awesome!

I used it for the first time tonight. The battery was at 34% charge having been driven all day (39.8 miles driven, about half of that on the freeway at an actual 65 MPH/indicated 70 MPH, and 22 miles of range left), and it was in my garage at about 45 degrees F. There are capacities shown at various points in the output, and I'm not sure which (if either) are the ones that indicate the health of the HV battery. Interestingly, I see that despite the gauge showing 34% SOC, there was something saying the actual SOC was 42%.

I'm charging it up and will run this again tomorrow morning when it is fully charged.

What do you all think?

Here is the output after charging to 100% overnight. It is a brisk 25 degrees F. outside but about 45 degrees F. in the garage. Real SOC is said to be 93.8% while displayed SOC is 100%.

Is this the relevant part:

Last measurement : 17 day(s)
Measurement estimation: 0.783
Actual estimation : 0.499
CAP mean: 18690 As/10, 51.9 Ah
CAP min : 18267 As/10, 50.7 Ah
CAP max : 18754 As/10, 52.1 Ah

and does this mean my battery capacity is 51.9 Ah versus the 52 as specified from the factory? These values did not change as it was probably 17 days ago that we last ran the battery below 20% and let it sit for some hours.

Here's the full output:

Thanks for the kind words Wayne. Thanks really go to my son. He built them. I'm only the mail room clerk. :)

He only built three extras the first time around and they went quickly. Should have another batch done in early January. Anyone who wants one, please drop me a PM.

I did remember a previous thread on interpreting the results, and here it is:

http://www.smartcarofamerica.com/forums/f170/diy-battery-diagnostics-116585/

So the "CAP min" is the important value, and mines is 48.9 Ah. Not so great, and I don't think it was ever established if this value changes due to temperature. Because both times I've run it, once at 34% SOC and the second at 100% SOC, I wonder if this just represents what was determined 16/17 days ago when I last ran the battery down and let it sit for a few hours. I'll just use this tool every few months to see how the values change.

Just a word of warning on the values posted in that other thread. During that time the firmware underwent a substantial amount of work. The numbers are not directly comparable.

That said, 48Ah, down from about 52Ah, on only seven thousand km isn't that great, but also not hugely bad if the battery was mistreated. Your individual cells are all very similar in value, which is great.

If i get a chance over the holidays I'll update my firmware version to the latest and run a new set of numbers out.

Blaine, the test shows that my battery pack was made on October 27, 2014. I took delivery of the at the beginning of this past June, 31 months after the battery was made, and the vehicle had **10** miles on it. It undoubtedly sat for a long, long time, probably got charged infrequently if at all. It was delivered via transport from California to Washington with 90% SOC but the salesperson said they just charged it up prior to shipping it. If that doesn't count as being abused, it's probably close.

If you do update your firmware and rerun the battery test, I'd appreciate any insight your new data would offer. Thanks.

Having the car sit for a 2 1/2 years at an initial 90 percent SOC is probably an ideal situation - not abuse at all. Under the very small power-off quiescent loads, the battery pack discharges only very slowly (self-discharge in open-circuit lithium cells is tiny) so after 2 1/2 years maybe it was down to 50 percent at a very worse case. That is an ideal storage situation - as long as it didn't get exposed to below -25C.

Unfortunately, lithium batteries, suffer calendar-degradation no matter how little use they get or how carefully they are stored. They degrade much less that earlier generation cells, but the degradation is still there. Calendar degradation is minimized by keeping the cell at a 50% SOC for as much of the cells life as possible.

Yinzer, There's no knowing what happened with the battery and SOC. It could have come to the dealer with 50% SOC and then just parked and left for two years as well. In the end, even if I'm down 5%, it still is working great for us, though of course I'd love to have all of the original capacity.

My two EV's seem to be doing just fine even though they sat for years on the dealer's lot. See notes below in my signature.

I ran the HV battery down to below 20% today and will let it sit for a few hours before charging it, to see if it resets the statistics.

Len, it's good to know that you also don't seem to be experiencing significant battery issues despite having a battery sitting for three years as well.

OK, I thought that you wrote that the car sat through a 2 1/2 year period with no use (only 10 miles on the odo) and an initial SOC of 90 percent. My guess of a final SOC of 50 percent is a super-conservative one jsut to argue that it did not get close to a low SOC. It was probably more like 80 percent at the end of 2 1/2 years. Sitting for a long time at a high SOC does increase calender degradation, though.

Regarding other point about needing to let the car sit for a couple hours below 20 percent before charging to get a good self-capacity measurement; that is really just a rumor that has floated around here. I see no reason why such a thing would be needed. Sure, the no-load voltages of partially discharged cells might take a minute or two to rebound after usage, but not hours.

And on my Smart, if left at a indicated SOC less than 10 percent, it will flash a warning to charge immediately and emit a warning beep, both of which do not go off (even after closing and locking the doors) until it is plugged in.

I'd be interested to hear what "Battery Degraded" means since his Ah numbers are very good. Don't think I ever heard that before.

My writing clarity is lacking! I have no idea how my ED was charged while it sat those two years. All I know is that when it arrived at my house from the transport company, it was at 90% SOC. It could have been charged up just before it was delivered, or it could have been charged multiple times while it just sat. I just don't know and didn't think to ask at the time of purchase.

Okay, so two days ago, I ran my ED down to about 16%, and let it sit for about four hours before plugging it in and charging it on 120 volt and maximum amperage. We then had a snowstorm, so it sat for about a day after being fully charged. I did another reading before driving it this afternoon, and the values are quite a bit higher. The "Last measurement" parameter now reads "1 day" and all of the capacity measures are over 50 Ah. So, I think the rumor is true - running it down to some low SOC and letting it sit for some number of hours seems to be necessary to get it to update the values.

All conditions were about the same - the garage was probably around 45 degrees F. during the entire process. We don't often drive it down to a real low SOC before recharging, but it looks like it may be helpful to do so at least every so often.

Just ran the data again after bring up charge to 100% Status is still degraded? Anybody have any ideas?
I compared your output to mines. I think in your output, this is the part that is causing the "degraded" message:

HV contactor state ON, low current: 79700 s
Cycles left : 294874
of max. cycles: 300000
DC isolation : 65535 kOhm, DC FAULT

Mines says this:

HV contactor state ON, low current: 2 s
Cycles left : 298515
of max. cycles: 300000
DC isolation : 65534 kOhm, OK

I have no idea why the "low current" value is so different, nor what that value means, or even if that is what is causing it to think you have a "DC FAULT".

Nice find, Now does anyone know what that means???
We'll need an EE to help us out here. I only know some very basics, and probably some of that is wrong as well. Anyhow. . .

A contactor is the name given to the device that interrupts a high current circuit, such as one that leads to a motor. It isn't designed to act instantaneously like a fuse or circuit breaker, but controlled by some other powered circuit. Since your output says it is "on", I would take that to mean that power can be delivered from your HV battery to the electric drive motor.

I don't know what the "low current" value is supposed to represent. From the thread I linked to in post 5 of this thread, cornwaller and Len Sokoloff posted their outputs from three different smarts, and all of the values were relatively low, I think the highest being cornwaller's 152. Being that it's in the same line as the "contactor" status, it might have something to do with the circuit that controls the contactor which can disconnect the HV battery from the electric motor. Perhaps it's not functioning and in the case of a severe failure where power to the motor would normally be disrupted, in the case of your ED the power remains connected? If so, that's potentially dangerous in case of something like an accident.

This is totally, 100% pure speculation. Having a little bit of knowledge is often a dangerous thing, and having a little bit of knowledge that I think is right but turns out to be factually wrong is even worse. Like I said, we need an EE to help out here.
