I noticed the other day a square shaped hole in the right side panel in the trunk (see attached picture). I have a 2016 ED. Do other people have this, or did I bust a hole in there dumping this into the trunk? Is it there for a reason? A cursory search of the car manual turned up nothing, but i have to admit to not reading the whole thing.

Yup, have the same thing. I have a 2014 ED cabrio. The indentation itself appears to be for the trunk/cargo cover, but why the additional hole on the right side, but not the left, I don't know.

If you pull up the carpet over the motor compartment you'll find that there is a plastic hook on the right side. This hooks into that hole and holds the carpet up out of the way. Its so you can open the steel cover and work on the coolant pump, battery charger etc.

Its the same on the ICE version as well.
