Got a HUD display last week. Some issues became obvious to me
as well. The film has to be perfectly flat or it distorts. Along with the small size
of the display, this makes reading hard. It seems not to read in MPH but rather
in KPH. I thought hard and came up with this solution for the distorted reflection
on the windshield. Some of the more sophisticated HUD's have a fold up window
for the reflective part of the display.
WELL, as it turns out the reflective film fits exactly in the clear part of a
CD jewel case. Visualize the black part of the Jewel Case on your dash
with the clear part, with the film applied raised up to the exact spot that it
appears clearly to you behind the drivers seat.
You may want to purchase another sticky holder for the hud box in addition
to the one that comes with the unit. Get the idea? Sticky pad, jewel case base,
sticky pad on top for the unit, mirror film on the inside of the jewel case and bingo!
F-15 type heads up. Now for the hard part.
How do you put the clear part of the jewel case in the correct relationship
to the projected info on the unit? Make sure you have an idea of the amount of
"angle" in relation to the clear and the base (black part) of the jewel case.
Super glue and hold for the 2-3 mins that it takes the super glue to harden.
If you've done it right the perfect angle. If you didn't, just get another jewel case and start over.
It looks really good and works so fine!

Does anyone make an hud that is completely self contained? I can't see getting a Smartphone just for having 1 feature that I would probably use (at least so far), besides that it must be cheap enough to make it worthwhile. Chumly

They do make self contained HUDs, they're even more expensive though. :(
