I bought an used imported 2003 smart which has been driven by one previous owner. At my local DMV they can't find any info on the 2003 as it's an import I suppose and smarts earlier than 2008 are not recognized in the general system. I believe they are trying to find out the value of the car for the flip price and tax etc? Anyhow, I left it in the hands of the DMV as they said they would do more research on the car. I gave them the title and import documents which prove it's legit. I went back yesterday and they still don't have an answer for me and it's been a week already. Has anybody been in this situation before and can help me move this along faster?

One problem I had was the VIN is different in Europe than the US. The digit thats tells the year of manufacture here is what tells if it is right hand drive or left hand drive in Europe. They kept insisting the smart was a 2001 instead of 2003.
