Central Illinois Smart car shop (excellent)
I highly recommend Rick's Automotive in Champaign.
Rick specializes in German cars and had no hesitation in working on my 08 Passion.
It's a good thing we purchased an extended warranty. Rick had to do a valve job at 40K!
He also figured out what caused our abnormally rough ride: the shocks were never released after the car was delivered from the factory!
That's likely the reason why the first owner sold it.
Slightly higher than normal hourly rate.
But Rick is an excellent mechanic and is worth the extra money.

My blower motor went out this morning and I paid Eskew Automotive a visit. Owen cleaned the blower motor for $39 (incl. tax!) and I was back on the road in short order!

My first post here
Moved recently from NY to Cincinnati OH (driving my 451) and looking for a good independent repair shop to take care of the car from now on.
Any real life (not google search) feedback/recommendations from people who use an independent repair shop for their fortwo would be much appreciated

I re-stumbled on them when searching for a replacement headlight, then realized they appear to be the same company that I derided a while ago as being for "eco-crazed yuppies" (except that now most hits for my search talk about them selling used TDIs).
Their Yelp reviews are just horrible. Maybe that's why they keep changing their name and/or moving?

This is the 2nd time I leave Schirmer's garage with the best impressions.
The first time they replaced rotors and pads on my 451 Fortwo.
This time they did the full 6 years service, replaced all shocks and struts and found easily their way with the driver's window that decided to stop working at the last minute!
It is hard to believe, but Jim and Bob will do their best to save money to their customer.
No need to say that they will be doing all service maintenance on my Smart as needed.
Highly recommended!

That's good to know - I've taken several of our cars there in the past and always liked them, but the last time I had one in, I mentioned that I'd just gotten a smart and they said that they'd changed the oil on one once. I guess they've gained a lot more experience since then. They're close enough I can drop it off and walk home in 5 minutes!

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH
I need service done in the North Myrtle Beach, Myrtle Beach, Conway area. I tried Eurotech in Myrtle Beach where they did an oil change and didn't know to reset the oil change indicator though they told me they knew everything about SMART cars. I had a key problem ( would not turn) and had Allen's work on it, $800!!! I was told the expense was the programming. Now my check engine light is on and when I idle my car shakes a lot. I know I need a tune-up, never had one and I have almost 147,000 miles. I also read about something called a flat belt. Since my dealership in Virginia Beach closed all I've ever done is oil changes and replace air filters. Now I'm living and working in North Myrtle and need somewhere close to here. The nearest dealership is Charleston which is over 2 hours away.

July 2016 I just called German Auto after seeing them mentioned in this post. They do NOT repair Smart Cars. Whatever computer tool they use does not give them codes. I asked them for a recommendation for someone else and they did not have any.
Update on Schirmer's Garage - they're no longer on Isabella; what's left of their crew is now working out of Mark Sweeney Buick/GMC's service department; Jim and the older Shirmer have retired, so I'm not sure who's left of the original Schirmer's Garage at this point.
