Hi,
I have a 2016 453 Prime 0.9T 5 speed manual which I really love and, apart from the following problem, runs well. However, occasionally, when the car hits a significant bump in the highway, it starts to emit a background whine/whistle from the engine compartment. The noise, in both pitch and volume, rises and falls in direct relationship to engine (not road) speed regardless of which gear the car is in. The noise remains, either until the car encounters another large bump, or until I switch off then restart the engine.
Something that may (or may not) be related to this issue is a very soft high pitched whistle from the engine which is just detectable every time I park-up. This is just detectable and about 5 mins after switching off.
Any help or observations re. the above would be really welcomed.

Thanks

Thanks for the replies. I’ll try to get a sound clip & post this the next time he problem occurs but it might be a couple of days before he problem re-occurs. It’s not every bump that sets it off so please bear with me.

The whine/whistle varies with throttle speed and, yes, it does continue regardless of which gear I’m in or whether I’m at a standstill in neutral. At tickover (800rpm) the noise isn’t detectable but it kicks in at approx. 1200 rpm and continues to rise in pitch as the revs increase. The best way to describe the sound is similar to the whine that you would get over the radio when the dynamo

I was initially thinking that you might be hearing a failing wheel bearing, but the pitch/cadence would change only with vehicle speed and happen with the car in gear or or neutral, independent of engine revs.

Based on your description, the sound happens even if the car isn’t in motion, but changes with engine speed. That eliminates things like wheel bearings and brake components.

That means things like the belt, AC, alternator, or moving engine parts are the more likely culprit. It’ll be interesting to hear the noise when you have the opportunity to record it.
