The lease is almost up on my 451, and I'm not sure I want to keep it or upgrade to a 453. I'd like a 450, but I have some questions.

  1. Where can I find one for sale in the US?
  2. Roughly how much do they go for?
  3. Has anyone imported one from Canada and if so how much work was it?
  4. What do I have to do to register it?
  5. Are they legal without any modifications?
Forgive me (and point me to it) if there's an existing thread on this, but I'd love to know.

ok, I LIVE in upstate NY, Syracuse area, I own a 450, and according to NY DMV the only one... that being said I can tell you my experience with a 450... first of all NY DMV doesnt recognize the VIN number.. and getting mine inspected a *****.. had to get a special inspector (two months in advance ) to verify the number, inspect, then verify again. Been at this 3 yrs now and had to get a special paper to carry around with the registration to confirm this. The previous owner from Queens had problems as well, one of the reasons I got the car as I did. He brought it up from FLA , transferd his registration to NY the first time without a problem (inspection wasnt due) but the second year his registration was due as well as inspection and that threw up the red flags to DMV. The DMV database does not have pre 08 SMART , however it does have nearly every make and model car in the world going back to 1902 EXCEPT Smart. I know .. I own some pretty odd stuff and never had problems until I got mine. And every year i go through all the HOOPS over and over. If by chance you go through a town with a cop car with the plate readers mounted on the back (they look like cameras on the rear trunk on both sides pointed at a 45 forward or back) you find out. You will get stopped, show papers, and then be on your mary way. This is only NY... other states could care less. BTW I have a pending case with NY DMV to change their database, so far because I have the only one they will not change it unless there is more then 25 450's registered in NY.. good luck they tell me.. LOL
as for a CANADIAN 450, if you can get it in, good luck.. another FYI, there is nobody that will work on a 450 in NY (except maybe me), dealers wont touch it , not MB or SMART ...and as for outside NY in the nearby states, again .. good luck.

I have two and a half 450's. If you need this for your dependable daily driver I would not recommend it. They can be dependable but if they are not you are in for a challenge. You have to do most all the work on them yourself, you will need specialized diagnostic equipment, and the parts can be weeks in the coming. They are bastard cars that you have to love to want, hobby cars!!!! On the other hand, if this is a fun car, you want to hop in the neatest little bug on the road, put on some good music, take it for a long road trip that leaves all your troubles behind, they do that pretty good. HAHAHA!!!

I agree with Dan.. they are fun, but if you dont know anything about 450's... its a BIG learning curve... straight up!
frustrating at times, rewarding at best, head banging at others...
the 450's are the red-headed bastard stepchild of even Smarts..and if you dont work on your own. 450... guess what..
NOBODY ELSE WILL EITHER!

I may put my 2005 450 up for sale. Right now I'm just feeling the waters. If interested, please contact me. I am the original owner, purchased it brand new from a G&K/ZAP Dealer in Pittsburg, PA. I am a fanatic with taking care of my cars. Always have been. I'd rather talk if you are interested.
