the owners manual does not describe(or at least what i can see) the difference berween the two wrenches (or spanners as the Brits call them) nor does it explain what is to be done based on the code that comes up.

Just looked in the 2013 manual under maintenance and it shows the single wrench being "Care Maint" and the double wrench being for "Main Service".
